Gratitude!
Arjun after gaining upper hand in fight with Gandharva king Chitrasena, said: Free Duryodhana immediately, for that is Maharāj Yudhisthira’s desire
Chitrasena said: You should consider that your elder brother has commanded you to free Duryodhana without knowing his evil intention in coming here. Let me bring Duryodhana to Yudhisthira. After I explain the situation, I shall leave the matter up to him
Thus Duryodhana was brought to Yudhisthira. After hearing everything from Chitrasena, Yudhisthira said: It is praiseworthy that you captured Duryodhana & didn’t kill him. Now pls release our cousin, along with all his brothers & their wives, if you wish to do what is agreeable to me
Kauravas & their wives were set free & with Yudhisthira’s permission,
Gandharvas departed to heaven
At this time Yudhisthira affectionately said to Duryodhana & his brothers: Dear cousins! Pls don’t ever again attempt to act so rashly. Now you’re free to return to Hastināpur. Kauravas departed, but were despondent because of their bitter defeat
After release, Duryodhana offered his respects to Yudhisthira, but was overwhelmed with shame. He was so heartbroken that he appeared almost lifeless as he set out for Hastināpur. He was by nature very proud, wicked, arrogant & conceited. And so he left slowly with his head hung in shame
While going, all that Duryodhana could think of was his painful defeat & how Arjun heroically forced Gandharvas to release him. When night fell, he set up camp along roadside. Soon thereafter, Karna met up with him. Karna & Vikarna had fled from battlefield and they were elated to see Duryodhana was alive & well. Actually, when Karna saw Duryodhana, he assumed that he must have vanquished Gandharvas & glorified him
Duryodhana replied choked with tears: After a long fight, Gandharvas surrounded us, smashed our chariots & took us captive. Yudhisthira ordered Bhima & Arjun to come to our rescue, who came & routed Gandharvas with shower of arrows. Arjun encaged them so that they were not able to flee thro’ aerial route & finally surrendered
Arjun smilingly asked Chitrasena to release us & Gandharva king disclosed that he knew all about our purpose in coming to Dvaitvana. I was taken in chains to Yudhisthira & in presence of my wife & other Kaurava women, I was set free by his order. Having thus been put into hands of my enemies & then released, I witnessed most miserable experience of my life
I’m now eternally indebted to Yudhisthira. It would have been far better if I had been killed by Gandharvas in battle
If our heart does not feel gratitude, then envy fills us to an extent that even good done by others looks abominable
Gratitude is a state of being that allows us to see positive in all situations. It comes from realization that there is good in the world & we are recipients of some good too. These good things come from an external reality & hence imbibes us with positivity
Say thanks & be grateful
