Envy!

As Dhritrāshtra was lamenting, Sakuni overheard him & then went to Duryodhana, who was sitting with Karna. Upon entering the room, the cunning Sakuni said: O King! The sovereignty of earth, with its rulers, and the unlimited opulence that Yudhisthira had formerly enjoyed are now yours without rival. After their kingdom was snatched away, the Pāndavās are living in impoverished condition on the shore of Dvaita Lake, along with numerous Brāhmanās

Let’s go there in full royal opulence, just to display ourselves before the Pāndavās, and make them burn with envy. The greatest joy for a Kshatriya is to see himself prosper while his enemies sink into adversity. It is just like looking down from the top of a hill & seeing rivals crawl upon the ground. It gives a king greater pleasure to see his enemies suffer than to simply enjoy his own wealth & prestige

My dear Duryodhana! you should take your wife & go to forest in royal style, just to see Pāndavās and Draupadi dressed in tree bark & deerskin

At first Duryodhana was very pleased to hear this, but then after a moment he became melancholy. Turning to Karna, Duryodhana said: My father will never allow me to do this, for he is sympathetic towards Pāndavās. I always wanted to go to forest so that I could exhibit my opulence before my cousin brothers. What joy could be greater than seeing them living miserably in the forest and Draupadi dressed in rags?

My dear friends! Pls think of some excuse for us to go to Dvaitavana, so that my father will give permission

Karna said: My friends! Let me describe a nice plan I have devised. Since our cows are kept at Dvaitavana, we could go there on the plea of making a routine inspection. This is quite customary for kings. I’m sure that King Dhritrāshtra will not refuse. Sakuni exclaimed: This is my plan as well & the 3 heartily laughed and shook hands

Soon the threesome presented themselves before Dhritrāshtra. As they inquired about his welfare, a cowherd named Samanga arrived, as arranged beforehand. He began to speak about the cows at Dvaitavana. Taking this cue, Karna & Sakuni suggested: O king! Now is the ideal time to go to the forest to count our cattle. The forest is very pleasant at this time of year & we can also do some hunting

Envy targets the envied but torments the envious. It is the inner dark tendency that makes us miserable at other’s success and impels us to drag them down. But more than tormenting others, envy tortures us incessantly. We cannot live in peace & our consciousness is dragged to plot envy-impelled actions. By understanding it’s nature, we should be determined to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards it

Envying others means to envy the Supreme Lord too, as we all are part & parcel of Him only
