Bigger picture!


Duryodhana’s army panicked & fled, but Karna did not waver & shot shower of arrows, checking onslaught of Gandharvas. Within a short time, mighty Karna killed many, but still Gandharvas held fast & rallied back at Kauravas. Being supported by Dhārtarāshtrās & Sakuni, Karna fought fiercely, and it soon appeared that he had gained upper hand


Enraged Gandharva king, Chitrasena then entered battlefield and by utilizing his mystic powers he created the illusion that 10 Gandharvas are fighting with each enemy soldier. Because of this, the warriors of Kaurava army once again panicked and ran away


Inspite of being wounded, Karna remained immovable, with Duryodhana & Sakuni by his sides. 1000’s of Gandharvas rushed at Karna & within a moment his chariot was destroyed & horses and driver was killed. Karna jumped to ground & mounting Vikarna’s chariot fled from battlefield


At this time all Kauravas, except Duryodhana also turned their backs and ran, so that he was soon surrounded. First the Gandharvas killed Duryodhana’s horses & driver, then smashed his chariot. Chitrasena quickly came & arrested Duryodhana & Duhsāsana


Meanwhile, some of the fleeing soldiers approached Pāndavās, who were living on the other side of lake, for protection. While handing over Kauravas chariots & weapons to Maharāj Yudhisthira, soldiers pleaded: Duryodhana & his brothers have been captured by Gandharvas. Please come quickly & rescue them


At this, Bhima exclaimed: What we could have done only with great endeavor has been easily accomplished by Gandharvas. Indeed, Bhima greatly rejoiced at the Kauravas’ defeat & declared: Wicked sons of Dhritrāshtra have got what they deserved for their evil deeds


However, Yudhisthira restrained Bhima saying: Kauravas have sought our protection and so it is our duty to save them. Even though there may be a dispute within our family, now that the honor of the Kuru dynasty is at stake, we cannot tolerate this aggression. Because Kauravas are insulted by Gandharva King & have been captured, along with their ladies, we must rescue them for the sake of our family prestige


Maharāj Yudhisthira ordered his brothers to utilize Kaurava’s chariots & fight with Gandharvas for the sake of freeing Duryodhana. He said: Even an enemy who seeks, it should be given protection. Besides, just think of how it will be a great source of pride & satisfaction for us if we are able to release Duryodhana! Although he has always been inimical towards us, now that he has fallen into difficulty, he will be forced to express his gratitude


Intelligence is not to give in to our emotions even if the situation is to our liking, leave alone adverse. We need to always see the bigger picture and calibrate the consequences of our actions. Dharmic principles should be guiding light for our response & to act accordingly greatly enhances not only our prestige but also gives satisfaction


We are known by what we do for others & not ourselves

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made.
