Mind!
Astāvakra’s lost father Kāhodā, who was drowned after being defeated by Vandin, arose from the river while being worshipped by Varuna. Kāhodā told King Janaka-I can now practically understand why sastra again & again emphasize importance of begetting a good son. That which I could never have achieved, has been accomplished by Astāvakra
Kāhodā very pleased with his son said-I want you to bathe in river & as soon as Astāvakra took bath all his crooked limbs became straight & from that time, the river was known as Samanga. Lomas Rsi urged Pāndavās to bathe there
Pāndavās continued their pilgrimage & went to regions of Kuvera in Himalayas, also the abode of Yaksas, Rāksasas, Gandharvās, Kimpurusas. Lomas Rsi warned them to act very cautiously, controlling their mind & senses, for the regions they’ll pass thro’ are normally inaccessible to human beings
As they proceeded towards Mount Kailāsa, they came to the source of Gangā which flows in 7 courses. Yudhisthira was considering Lomasa Rsi’s words of caution & with his mind he said to Bhima: Act very carefully & restrain yourself, not giving way to hunger or thirst. Or stay here with Sahadev & Draupadi & I’ll go with Nakula undergoing strict vows. But Bhima said he will come with him to protect them
Finally, they reached base of Gandhamādana mountain, which can only be ascended by strength of one’s acquired merit of austerity. They approached mount Mandara, near Alaknandā river, the sporting ground of demigods. When they came to what appeared to be a great white mountain, Lomas Rsi explained-This hill is actually bones of Narakāsura, killed long ago by Sri Visnu for the benefit of Indra
Narakāsura had performed severe austerities for 10000 years to overthrow Indra from his post. At last Indra took shelter of Lord Visnu, the ultimate resort of everyone. Out of his causeless mercy, Lord appeared to kill demon & save Indra
The Pāndavās proceeded thro’ mountainous regions & faced violent winds, dust, heavy rains, thunder & it looked like the world has come to an end. Draupadi suddenly collapsed due to exhaustion. Bhima seeing the rough terrain summoned his son Ghatotkacha. The giant then carried all & soon they crossed over to reach Kailāsa. They saw āsrama of Nara & Nārayana Rsis
After purifying themselves, Pāndavās approached sages at Badrikāsrama & were welcomed with nice reception
Either there is rough physical or mental terrain to be crossed, the sanity, purity & stable mind is a must to move forward. Else, the restless, obstinate, turbulent & very strong mind can break us in between. Although mind should be subservient to intelligence, but it overcomes it. In practical world, where we are fighting with so many opposing elements, it is certainly very difficult to control mind
The easiest way to control mind is to engage it continuously in the service of Krsna, the Supreme Lord. The mantra meditation on his names leaves no other engagement to agitate the mind
