Intoxication!
Pāndavās & Yādavās bid one another farewell. Thereafter, when pilgrimage arrived at Narmadā river, Lomas Rsi narrated history of Sage Cyavana & his marriage to Sukanyā, daughter of King Saryāti
Cyavana was old & invalid, whereas Sukanyā was young & beautiful. Once being pleased with Sukanyās chastity, Asvini-kumāras transformed Cyavana into a youthful man. Being very pleased, sage told Asvinis: In return for your favor, I’ll one day utilize my ascetic prowess to enable you to drink soma-rasa in presence of Indra, even though you’re not qualified
The kumāras were happy to hear this & they returned to their heavenly residence. Some time later, when king Saryāti heard that Cyavana had been transformed into a youth, he joyfully went to forest to visit him. The sage greeted his father-in-law with great respect & requested: I would like you to perform great sacrifice in which I’ll officiate as chief priest
The King happily agreed & on an auspicious day, sacrifice commenced & all demigods came to attend. While Yagya was in progress, Cyavana picked up a pot of soma juice with intention of offering it to Asvinis. Understanding this Indra forbade sage saying: kumarās are physicians & hence aren’t fit for drinking celestial beverage
Cyavana replied-Twin Asvinis did me a favor by giving me a youthful body. Besides they’re certainly considered demigods & should be given same facilities as their peers. Indra argued:Physicians are mere servants! They often take human forms & roam earth & thus can’t be equated with other residents of heaven. Although Indra remained adamant, Cyavana ignored him & at last picked up soma-rasa to offer it to Kumarās
Indra became very angry seeing this impudence & said if sage goes ahead, he’ll kill him with his thunderbolt. Cyavana merely smiled & without hesitation continued to offer. Indra quickly employed his weapon, but the sage paralyzed his arm before he could release it. As Indra remained paralyzed, sage finished offering soma-rasa to kumarās. Indeed, Cyavana was so angry with Indra that he uttered some mantrās & created a huge demon named Mada to kill him
Huge demon rushed at Indra to devour him with his wide-open mouth. Seeing his imminent destruction, Indra pleaded sage to save him & he’ll allow Asvinis to drink rasa during all sacrifices in future. The sage was pacified & made the demon desist. To engage ferocious monster, sage distributed him (Mada means intoxication) amongst liquor, women, gambling & field sports (as well as mental games & speculation
We can see how people are intoxicated with their false ego & engage themselves with above means, enhancing their destruction. This comes in very gross & subtle forms
Krsna says
prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ
ahaṅkāra-vimūḍhātmā kartāham iti manyate
The spirit soul bewildered by the influence of false ego thinks himself the doer of activities that are in actuality carried out by the three modes of material nature
