Contamination!
After
his meeting, Bhima continued to ascend Gandhamādana
mountain absorbed in thoughts of Lord Rām & Hanumān. The Sun had reached meridian
when he arrived at a very beautiful lake wherein grew golden Saugandhika lotus
flowers, effulgent like Sun. Feeling that his goal had at last been achieved, he
first drank some cool water & then prepared to gather celestial lotus flowers
The lake was situated
within garden belonging to Kuvera guarded by 1000’s of Rāksasās. When they saw
Bhima entering lake to pick lotuses, they came before him & demanded: who
are you & why you’ve come here?
Bhima introduced himself
& said: I’ve come here to pick some of these lotuses at the behest of my
wife Draupadi. Rāksasās said-You must first take permission of Kuvera before
you touch even a single lotus flower. None can take these without his consent.
If you ignore our advice, you’ll meet with destruction
Bhima said: I don’t
see Kuvera present here, so there is no question of taking his permission. Even
if he was here, I wouldn’t ask his permission because it’s not business of Kshatriya
to beg permission from anyone. Besides, this lake belongs to nature & not
to any particular person & can be used by all. Saying this Bhima dove into
lake & Rāksasās who had become enraged because of his impudence rushed to
seize him
Bhima quickly came
out of water, picked his mace & attacked them. Soon 100’s were killed &
the rest ran away. Bhima once again plunged into lake, drank nectarean water
& his strength became revived. As he plucked golden lotuses, surviving Rāksasās
came to Kuvera & informed his about the intruder
Kuvera simply
smiled & said-Let Bhima take as many flowers as he wants. Don’t worry! I
already knew about his arrival before you came. Rāksasās gave up their anger
& returned to the lake. Meanwhile Yudhisthira found Bhima missing &
with all followed the path which Bhima had taken to the mountain. He soon
reached Saugandhika Lake & saw Bhima within water with numerous slain Rāksasās
strewn about on the shore
Yudhisthira
immediately embraced Bhima & said: What you’ve done? You must never act so
rashly again as you may offend great demigods
Krsna says:
sattvānurūpā
sarvasya śraddhā bhavati bhārata
śraddhā-mayo ’yaṁ puruṣo yo yac-chraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ
O son of Bharata,
according to one’s existence under various modes of nature, one evolves a
particular kind of faith. The living being is said to be of a particular faith
according to the modes he has acquired
Everyone has a
particular type of faith, regardless of what he is. But his faith is considered
good, passionate or ignorant according to the nature he has acquired. Every
living being, is originally a fragmental part & parcel of the Supreme Lord.
Therefore, one is originally transcendental to all modes of material nature
But when one
forgets this relationship & comes into contact with material nature in
conditional life, he generates his own position by association with the
different varieties of material nature. The resultant artificial faith and
existence are only material. Therefore, one must become cleansed of the
material contamination that he has acquired, in order to regain his
relationship with the Supreme Lord
