Impact!

As Nala & Damyanti were reunited, they recalled unbearable miseries forced to undergo. Thus, in 4th year after loss of kingdom, Nala was once again with his wife & she blazed forth with great beauty and splendor, her anxieties dispelled & heart swelling with joy

Next morning King Nala, who was now dressed in royal garments, came with Damyanti & presented himself to King Bhima. He offered his obeisance to his father-in-law & King received him like a dear son. Throughout Kundina news spread & all citizens celebrated return of Nala. When King Rituparna learned that Bāhuka was actually Nala,he called for Nisāda hero begging forgiveness

Rituparna said: It is by good fortune that you’ve regained your wife after long separation. I hope I hadn’t mistreated or offended you in any way & if I committed any, please forgive me. Nala replied that he was very well treated & promised to teach him all he knew about managing horses & repay him for imparting the art of dice playing

After residing for a month at Kundina, Nala set out for kingdom of Nisāda driving a white chariot with a small army. Highly enraged, he entered his former capital now held by his brother Puskara. He challenged: I’ve once again acquired great wealth & am eager to play dice with you. Let Damyanti & all else I possess be at stake against the kingdom you formerly won from me. In addition, let the loser be slave of victor. If you decline to gamble, let’s fight with weapons if you prefer

Being proud of his success, Puskara laughingly said-It’s by good fortune you earned more wealth with which to gamble. Together with all you have, I’ll also win beautiful Damyanti this time. Bragging thus Puskara agreed for the match. As the game commenced, with a single throw of dice Nala won back his entire wealth & kingdom as well as life of his brother

Still compassionate King Nala smilingly said-The kingdom is now undisputedly mine & you cannot even cast your glance upon princess of Vidarbha. Now with family, you’re a mere slave to us. My former defeat at your hands wasn’t your doing. You certainly became proud of your success, but all that happened was under influence of Kali. For this I don’t hold you responsible, instead, I’ll give you your freedom & a share of our parental kingdom so that you can live happily

I once again treat you as my brother with no less affection than before. Let’s forget our past differences!

Puskara offered respects & said with folded hands-May your fame become immortal & you live happily. I’m forever indebted to you, for you’ve given me new life & refuge

When we exercise compassion for others either materially or spiritually, we need to be caring to understand their frustration & dissatisfaction. We identify the root cause & help them accordingly to come out of their situation. We also need to be careful that just by being compassionate, we may overindulge in their situation & get ourselves contaminated to lose way

A thoughtful combination of being careful & caring is what is required as per time, place & circumstances of others. If not, our charitable efforts can have negative impact. Let’s channel our compassion constructively to actually help
