Elevate or Fall!

King Bhima happily celebrated the marriage of his daughter with Nisāda prince. Newly wedded Nala & Damyanti stayed at Kundina for some time & then Nala set out for his kingdom alongwith his beloved wife. After returning, Nala began passing his days with great joy with his wife & simultaneously ruling his subjects in righteous manner. He performed Ashvamedha Yagya & many other sacrifices & gave abundant charity to Brāhmanās. In due course of time, a twin son & daughter were born named Indrasen & Indrasena

As demigods were returning to heaven after attending Damyanti’s Swayamvara, they saw 2 presiding deities of 2 yugas approach. Being curious, Indra asked: O Kali, where are you going in such a hurry with Dvāpara? Kali replied: We are going to Damyanti’s Swayamvara as our heart is captivated by the princess & I wish to obtain her as my wife. Indra smiled & said: The princess has already chosen King Nala as her husband, even in our presence

Kali, the worst of celestials, when he heard that Damyanti Swayamvara is already over & she has chosen her husband, became filled with rage & declared: Since Damyanti has chosen a mere mortal in presence of exalted demigods, she & her husband must undergo terrible suffering as punishment for their impudence. Demigods said: Pls control your anger, as Damyanti chose Nala with our approval. Nala is a very qualified & handsome king & is conversant with all scriptures. He has exalted virtues

In terms of knowledge, self-control, austerity, purity & tranquility, Nala is our equal in all respects. Kali! Any fool that curses this great & faultless person would actually condemn himself & destroyed by his own actions. After saying this, demigods continued on their way but Kali said: I can’t suppress my anger over this matter. I shall go & possess Nala, deprive him of his kingdom & his wife too. Dvāpara, I want you to help me. Enter the dice which the ill-fated Nala will play under my influence

With Dvāpara, Kali began to invisibly reside at Nala’s palace, ever intent to find a flaw in his behavior. In this way 12 years passed. Then one day Kali noticed that after passing urine, Nala touched water before saying his evening prayers, but forgot to wash his feet. Taking advantage of this lapse, Kali entered the King’s body & began to possess him

In a 2nd expansion Kali appeared before Nala’s younger brother Pushkara & asked him to challenge his brother to play the game of dice. I’ll help you so that you’ll win without doubt. After defeating Nala, you’ll be the unrivalled ruler of Nisādas. Dvāpara approached Pushkara & said-I’ll enter the dice called Vrsa & while you gamble, I’ll roll in your favor only to win Nala’s kingdom

After receiving these assurances, Pushkara confidently went to Nala & urged, Let’s play dice. As Nala was challenged in front of Damyanti, he couldn’t refuse & agreed for a gambling match

There are four regulative principles in this age of Kali which all of us need to follow-No intoxication, No Illicit sex, No Meat & No gambling. These 4 things intensify our material illusion & takes us away from our natural spiritual consciousness. If we want to elevate ourselves from material quagmire to spiritual bliss, these fundamental principles coupled with chanting the names of the Lord, keeps us determined on the path of elevation
