Determination!

As Damyanti heard rattle of chariot, which Bāhuka (Nala) was driving, she reminisced about his exalted personality & unlimited virtues. She decided that if Nisāda King Nala doesn’t come to her today, she’ll enter blazing fire. Lamenting about her fate, she went to palace roof hoping to catch a glimpse of Nala

Down in courtyard, Damyanti saw King Rituparna seated on his chariot with Bāhuka & Varsneya. After getting down from chariot, he presented himself before King Bhima & received with respect. As King of Ayodhyā’s visit was unannounced & there was no special occasion being celebrated at Kundina, Bhima wondered about arrival of such distinguished guest. Rituparna also looked around & saw no preparation for Swayamvara happening

King Bhima enquired: Pls tell me purpose for which you’ve come from Ayodhya. Intelligent Rituparna couldn’t see other kings & princes gathered there nor any talk of Swayamvara or assembly of Brahamanas, thought about it for a while & said-I’ve come here simply to pay my respects to you. Bhima was astonished to hear such answer & wondered about real purpose of his visit. He however was patient & waited to learn truth. Rituparna retired to allotted quarters to rest. Bāhuka took chariot to stables & unyoked the horses

As Nala was in a changed look as Bāhuka, Damyanti was aggrieved & thought: The sound of Rituparna’s chariot resembled distinctive rumbling sound that Nala formerly made, but I can’t see him present here. It could be that Varsneya has learned the technique from him or Rituparna is just as skilled as Nala so his chariot produces same sound

She asked her maidservant Kesini to go to stables to find out name of the charioteer taking care of Rituparna’s horses. I’m convinced that the chariot driver is somehow or the other King Nala. Kesini went to stables & said: Princess Damyanti wishes to know purpose of 3 of you coming here & true identity of your self

Bāhuka said: A Brahmana came to Ayodhya & informed that Damyanti is holding her second Swayamvara. It is for this reason king has come with help of these excellent horses within a day. I’m King’s charioteer Bāhuka. The 3rd person is Varsneya , formerly King Nala’s charioteer who went to Ayodhya after King Nala was exiled

Kesini asked if he knows the whereabouts of King Nala? Bāhuka said that no one knows where is Nala except he himself. On further explanation that how Damyanti is an aggrieved woman due to separation from Nala, & after hearing from a Brahmana, who previously went to Ayodhya & heard from him speaking about her & Nala, she anticipates that Nala is around

Nala became very pained at heart listening to Kesini & his eyes were filled with tears. Although burning with grief, Nala repressed his sorrow & said: Chaste woman even when overwhelmed by adversity, remain fixed in her vows & is guaranteed exalted destination in heaven. She shouldn’t be angry with Nala who is overtaken by great misfortune & was forced to desert her

Kesini returned & told Damyanti & related to her all that had taken place. She became all more anxious & convinced that Bāhuka was indeed Nala, seems to be true

There is difference between fearing failure & assuming failure. Fearing prevents us to try something risky & lowers our expectations to still take small steps towards success. But assuming failure is always undesirable as it paints dire future consequences & hence prevents us to take any action by just imagination

What are we determined at?
