Break-Free!
Sage Brhadsava told
Yudhishthira a story about Nisāda King Nala, son of Virasena. Just like Indra
in heaven, Nala was foremost amongst monarchs & like sunshine his fame
spread everywhere. He was powerful & heroic warrior & foremost of
archers. The righteous & truthful king was a great soul, well-versed in
Vedas & led a highly disciplined life. He also had fondness for playing
dice
There was a king
named Bhima who ruled Vidharbha kingdom & like Nala was a highly virtuous
man. He was also a powerful warrior & unwavering hero on battlefield. He
was loved by citizens but as he was childless he was morose. One-day great
Brahmarsi Damana arrived at royal court of Bhima’s capital Kundina. He was
provided most warm welcome by king & queen & was pleased with their hospitality.
To reciprocate he benedicted that royal couple will be blessed with a daughter
& 3 sons in due course
The girl when born
was named Damyanti & the 3 boys grew up to possess extraordinary prowess.
As she grew up, Damyanti became famous all over world due to her remarkable
beauty. She shown like goddess of fortune & none either in heaven or on
earth possessed feminine attraction equal to princess. Indeed, demigods became
gladdened at heart upon seeing her
King Nala was also
without rival in the world & was wonderfully handsome. Professional
storytellers glorified Nala in front of Damyanti & vice versa to Nala in
their palaces. Hearing repeatedly about one another, both developed attraction for
each other although they never met. Gradually Nala became so attached to Damyanti
that he passed much of his time alone in palace gardens deep in her thoughts
One day Nala saw
some celestial swans with golden wings in the garden & caught one out of curiosity.
Frightened, the swan pleaded: I don’t deserve to be killed by you, pls spare
me. In return I’ll do something pleasing for you. I’ll go to Vidarbha &
speak about you to Damyanti in such an enchanting way that she would never
desire anyone else except you as her husband. Nala was surprised to hear the
swan speak like this & let it go
The entire flock of
swans then went to Damyanti. Seeing those celestial swans, the princess ran after
one and came to a secluded place. In human voice swan said-O lovely maiden of
fair complexion there is a king named Nala , who is so handsome that he looks
like a demigod from heaven. If you can become his wife, your beauty & good
qualities will serve the purpose for which they are created. Damyanti was mesmerized
& she begged the swan to go to Nala & speak sweet words about her to
him
The swan then came
back to Nala & related what happened at Kundina. Both Nala & Damyanti
were struck with Cupid’s arrows & lost composure. King Bhima was distressed
by his daughter’s condition & at last concluded that it is time to arrange
a Swayamvara of his daughter for marriage
In response, all
directions soon became filled with rattle of chariots of Kings & princes who
began arriving at Kundina
Attachment to
material is the sole reason for our trial & tribulations. We are so bound
by the ropes of our attachments that bind not our body but our mind. These
ropes shackle us to think freely. Attachment is the inability to say No
whatever is the cost in fulfilling the desire we are after. The only way to
break free is to shift our liking from the external which is temporary to the permanent
indwelling Super Soul
