Indra noticed how Arjun repeatedly stared at Urvashi.
He called Chitrasena & ordered: Go & inform Urvashi that she should
entertain Arjun, & make him conversant with the art of enjoying female
companionship. Chitrasena went to Urvashi & informed about King Indra’s instructions
Celestial beauty Urvashi smiled & replied: It’ll
be my great pleasure to accept Arjun as my lover for I’m already under
influence of Cupid’s arrow. She then dressed & decorated herself gorgeously,
putting on flower garlands & celestial perfumes. When evening arrived &
the moon rose above eastern horizon, she went to Arjun’s residence. Urvashi appeared
beautiful in silk garments having exceptionally delightful expression on her
face. She, who is considered pinnacle of beauty in heavenly planets appeared even
more beautiful on this occasion
As she reached Arjun’s residence, she announced
her presence to doorkeeper & was ushered in. When Arjun saw that Urvashi
had come to his home at night, he became little fearful of meeting her. Indeed,
out of shyness, he closed his eyes & approached her. Showing great respect,
he said: Please consider me your servant & thus command me as you desire. Urvashi
said that she has come under instruction of his father to accompany him & came
to accept him as her lover. My dear handsome hero, I’m very much attracted to
you & thus in eagerness have come
Arjun became exceedingly bashful & even
covered his ears with hands listening to Urvashi. He said: O best of Apsarās, I
consider you to be my superior, just like mother. Indeed, you’re mother for
entire Kuru dynasty & thus it was with awe & veneration, I had gazed upon
you. Urvashi said: We Apsarās are completely free to accept whoever we like as our
lovers. Thus, even sons & grandsons of Purus sport with us without
incurring any sin. Don’t think of turning me away as I’m burning with desire to
have you
Arjun respectfully insisted that he saw her as her
mother just like Kunti, Mādri or Saci. He’ll worship her like a son & in
return she should protect him like a mother. Urvashi understood her frustration
& a terrible anger arose in her heart. She cursed Arjun saying: Because you’ve
neglected a woman who approached you under dictates of lust & at the
command of your father, you’ll have to pass some time in company of women as a eunuch
dancing teacher
As Urvashi returned, Arjun informed the matter to
Indra. The King of heaven said-Son! You’ve surpassed even the great sages in
maintaining self-control in presence of beautiful woman. Don’t be afraid of
Urvashi’s curse, for it’ll act for your benefit during the 13th year
of your exile, the period when you’ll have to remain incognito. After passing
that year as eunuch, you’ll regain your manhood
With self-control, we can change the most adverse
of situations to our advantage. Krsna says
yadā saṁharate cāyaṁ kūrmo ’ṅgānīva sarvaśaḥ
indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyas tasya
prajñā pratiṣṭhitā
One who is able to withdraw his senses from sense
objects, as the tortoise draws its limbs within the shell, is firmly fixed in
perfect consciousness
Senses are like venomous serpents & want to
act loosely without restriction. Let’s not use it for sense gratification but
for higher purpose. We can then turn adversity into elevation
