Attachment!

Dhritrāshtra said to Yudhisthira: Don’t take Duryodhana’s harsh words seriously. Just think of poor Gāndhāri & me, who’re old & blind. I had sanctioned this gambling match just to have opportunity of seeing old friends & examining character of my sons. Pls return to Indraprastha & let there be brotherly love between you & your cousins

Pāndavās offered their respects to their old blind uncle & then along with Draupadi mounted their chariots & left. After their departure Dushasana approached his elder brother in great distress & lamented: All that we gained by great endeavor has now been thrown away by our father

Duryodhana took Dushasana, Karna & Sakuni to where Dhritrāshtra was seated alone. Desiring to change his attitude towards Pāndavās, the 4 conspirators addressed him in such a way so as to paint a false picture of how Pāndavās departed with fiercely revengeful attitude

Duryodhana said: Dear Father! Pāndavās are carefully looking at 1st opportunity to gain revenge against me. Therefore, we should take away all their wealth & employ it to ally ourselves with the most powerful kings of Earth. After accomplishing this there would be no difficulty to defeat them in war. They’ll never forgive us for having insulted Draupadi

Before they take revenge, we should again challenge Pāndavās to play dice. This time they should be sent to exile for 12 years, with stipulation that 1 additional year must be spent incognito. During that period, we can consolidate our allies & become powerful enough to defeat them if they try to challenge us upon their return from forest

Dhritrāshtra didn’t have heart to deny his son the opportunity of fulfilling his wicked ambitions. Thus, he agreed to his plan & ordered that the Pāndavās be called back to Hastināpur for a game of dice

Hearing this unfortunate reversal, Bhisma, Drona, Krpā, Vidura, Vahilka, Somadatta, Asvatthāma, Yuyutsu & Bhurisravā tried to make Dhritrāshtra change his mind. They urged that peace be fostered rather than quarrel. However, due to partiality towards his eldest son, Dhritrāshtra ignored their good advice

We all have attachment to one thing or the other, but Krsna tells us in Bhagvad Gita to attach ourselves & our consciousness to him. This attachment is all elevating from the bewilderment of material bonds to bliss in spiritual realm

mayy āsakta-manāḥ pārtha yogaṁ yuñjan mad-āśrayaḥ

asaṁśayaṁ samagraṁ māṁ yathā jñāsyasi tac chṛṇu

Now hear, O son of Pṛthā, how by practicing yoga in full consciousness of Me, with mind attached to Me, you can know Me in full, free from doubt

Let’s have proper attachment to the Supreme Lord & he would guide us from inside to follow principles of elevation & not degradation

This attachment detaches us from material contamination to purification. We can then see light
