The 3 modes!


Dhritrāshtra had second thoughts & so he again called Duryodhana & said-I’ve consulted Vidura & he has vividly described faults of your plan. It’s a fact that gambling always leads to dissension & so you should remain satisfied with your own kingdom, prosperous in its own right


Duryodhana said-Father! You should not speak like this. It is natural for a kshatriya to become jealous upon seeing enemies flourish. During Rājsuya sacrifice, I was put in charge of receiving gifts that visiting kings presented to Yudhisthira. The amount of jewels was so vast that I was soon exhausted just be carrying them. I had to rest for a while, so that other kings were forced to wait for me to resume work


Thereafter, as I resided at Pāndavās royal assembly hall, I became so bedazzled by its opulence that I mistook land for water & water for land. Bhima saw my foolish mistake & laughed at me. As Yudhisthira had his avabhrtha bath, many great kings carried jars of sacred water, while others stood ready with garlands, shoes etc. The ceremony was performed by Dhaumya, Vyāsdev, Nārada & Devala


The ocean personified appeared there carrying a golden conch shell made by Vishwakarma. With it Lord Krsna personally performed final bathing. When I saw my cousin brother receiving so much honor, I nearly fainted due to shock


O father! Pāndavās kingdom not only extends to southern, western & eastern regions, but even to northern oceans, which can generally be approached only by birds. There was innumerable conch shells Arjun brought from northern ocean which all sounded together at end of sacrifice. Weaker men fell unconscious hearing it & only 8 persons in assembly remained undisturbed. Unless I can do something to reverse this,I can no longer live


Dhritrāshtra said-You should give up your enviousness & be satisfied with your kingdom. It is abominable to covet property of others. Instead of trying to usurp wealth of your cousins, I suggest that you also perform a great sacrifice & obtain fabulous wealth & fame


This kind unpalatable advice made Duryodhana more irritable & he said-You’re foolishly neglecting your own interest & thus your behavior is most unsuitable for a Kshatriya


Krsna says in BG

karmanah sukrtasyahuh sattvikam nirmalam phalam

rajasas tu phalam duhkham ajnanam tamasah phalam


By acting in mode of goodness, one becomes purified. Work done in mode of passion result in distress, & actions performed in mode of ignorance result in foolishness


By pious activities in mode of goodness one is purified, is free from all illusion & situated in happiness. Activities in mode of passion are simply miserable. Any activity for material happiness is bound to be defeated. In mode of ignorance, performer is without knowledge & therefore all his activities result in present misery and afterwards he will go on toward animal life


A civilization which guides citizens to become animals in their next lives is certainly not a human civilization

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made. Duryodhana flattered Salya by comparing him to Lord Brahmā, who formerly became Shiva’s charioteer at the time of destroying Tripura   Duryodhana concluded his long talk by saying: Dear Salya, Parasurāma delivered the entire science of weapons to Karna.   Krsna’s plan!   As Asvattāma asked Krpa about what happened to his father Drona, with great anguish Krpa said: My dear Asvattāma, your father was killed by Dhrishtadyumna. Knowing Drona to be invincible as long as he would wield his weapons, Sri Krsna ordered Yudhisthira to falsely inform him of your death.
