As Sisupāl’s head was severed & it fell on the floor, a dazzling spark of light (soul) came out of his body. While stationed in air, that purified soul worshipped Lord Krsna & entered His transcendental body as everyone looked on in astonishment. At that time, even though sky was cloudless, profuse rain began to fall, lightening flashed, thunder crashed, earth trembled & combined effect was awe inspiring. All Brāhmanās & sages were highly delighted seeing this

Maharāj Yudhisthira had his brothers respectfully perform Sisupāl’s funeral ceremony & thereafter his son was installed as Cedi King. With all impediments removed, Rājsuya sacrifice was successfully completed under protection of Sri Krsna, who stood guard with his Sāranga bow & Sudarshana cakra

Finally, Yudhisthira took avabhrtha bath & then all kings came & congratulated him. All kings were then respectfully seen off with Pāndavās accompanying them to the border of Indraprastha. Sri Krsna asked Yudhisthira to leave for Dvārakā to which the Pāndavās became despondent but still bid farewell with heavy heart. Vyāsdev was worshipped with great reverence & devotion before his departure & Yudhisthira took opportunity to inquire about something of great curiosity

He asked-O sage as I was seated with Nārada Muni in the arena of Rājsuya sacrifice when he mentioned that he could observe 3 kinds of evil omens-celestial, terrestrial & atmospheric. Would you explain to us clearly what these signs indicate?

The sage replied in grave voice-My dear grandson, soon you’ll have to undergo 13 years of hardship & at the end of the period there will occur a great destruction of practically all Ksatriyā’s on earth. This misfortune will be result of Duryodhan’s sins. For your sake Bhima & Arjun will exhibit their devastating prowess. Tonight, you’ll dream of Lord Sivā, who while seated upon his bull carrier & gazing towards abode of Yamarāja will be seen drinking the contents of a human skull. You shouldn’t be disturbed by this dream, for everything is being enacted by the will of destiny under direction of eternal time

Vyāsdev then departed for Mount Kailāsa along with his disciples. From that time onwards, Yudhisthira was filled with anxiety & became depressed while constantly thinking about the sage’s words. He at last fining his anguish unbearable announced to his brothers that he’d rather die than become the cause of so much destruction. Arjun encouraged his brother by saying-Don’t yield to depression as it corrodes one’s good intelligence. Act in a way that proves beneficial to all

Yudhisthira was somewhat consoled by Arjun’s words & considering the matter deeply, vowed that for the next 13 years, he’d never speak a harsh word to any Ksatriyā. Will practice virtue, remain under guidance of his elders & make no distinction between his relatives & so-called outsiders. This was to leave no room for disagreement, the cause of any future war

Yudhisthira hoped to avoid future destruction that was destined to happen by being careful not to create enmity with others. We need to understand that both destiny & exertion play parts in forming future events. Sometimes destiny is stressed & at other personal efforts are praised. But ultimately the will of the Supreme Lord Krsna will prevail & cannot be counteracted by any amount of our endeavor

We thus need to perform our prescribed duty & simultaneously depend upon the Supreme Lord for the result. We are not the only doers but should contribute to the best of our abilities knowing that the result of our efforts depends on the sanction of the Supreme
