Miserly weakness!
Duryodhana was curious to find what Sakuni had in mind. He revealed plan as follows-It’s a well-known fact that Yudhisthira is very fond of playing dice, even though not very expert at the game. If you challenge him to a game of dice, as a staunch Kshatriya, he’ll be unable to refuse. I can play on your behalf & as I’m unequalled in all 3 worlds in art of throwing dice, I can easily win Yudhisthira’s entire kingdom & hand it over to you. Go ask your father permission to execute this clever scheme
Duryodhan’s heart beat fast with excitement as he listened to this nefarious plan. Still, he said-I would never dare say all this in front of my father. Why don’t you go & speak to my father in such a way that he’ll become sympathetic towards my plight?
So Sakuni went to Dhritrāshtra with Duryodhana & said-O King! Your son has become very pale & anxious witnessing prosperity & influence of his enemies. Dhritrāshtra said with concern-My son! Whole wealth & opulence of Kuru kingdom is at your disposal. How is that you’re unhappy? Duryodhana replied-Witnessing superior opulence of Pāndavās, I can no longer take pleasure in my paltry possessions. Yudhisthira is personally maintaining 88000 qualified Brahmanās, feeds them sumptuously on gold plates & gives them lavish charity
At the time of Rājsuya sacrifice, kings from all over world presented heaps of jewels to him, which I never saw before. Indeed, their wealth is now indescribable & just the thought of it makes my heart burn with envy. Sakuni noticed that Dhritrāshtra face had a pained expression now. Taking advantage of this good opportunity, he explained his wicked plan to Duryodhana, within his father’s hearing
He said-we should invite Yudhisthira to Hastināpur to take part in game of dice. I can employ art of cheating & after winning all his wealth, I’ll hand it to you
Duryodhana said-Father! pls give us permission to carry out this clever plan. By doing this I’m sure my life’s goals will be finally achieved
Dhritrāshtra said-You know that in all matters, I must first consult Vidura, for his advice is always as per moral principles. Let me talk to him & if he approves you can go ahead. Duryodhana bitterly responded-Vidura will never give his sanction. If you don’t grant permission, I’ll kill myself out of desperation
Dhritrāshtra was always partial to his pet son. Hearing his suicide threat, he immediately ordered a palatial hall to be constructed to serve as gambling arena. He thus pacified Duryodhana by giving many assurances
Our dissatisfaction arising out of unhindered lust is weakness of mind which makes us believe that whatever we are doing is justified. Instead of arresting material waves of dualities such as heat-cold, pleasure-pain, honor-dishonor, we are dragged by it and are overwhelmed by storm
This symptom of material world is all devouring. Only refuge & relief from this misery is to raise our consciousness vertically to spiritual level
