Lust it is!

Bhisma told Bhima about Sisupāla-When the news about wonderful prophecy (that anyone on whose lap Sisupāl’s superfluous arms & third eye will disappear will later become his killer) spread, all kings of earth came to see little baby & yet even though 1000’s of men placed child on their laps, what was predicted didn’t occur. Krsna & Balrāma also heard the news & left Dvārkā desiring to see Sisupāl’s mother, who was their paternal aunt

After Krsna/Balrāma arrived at Damaghosa’s palace & were comfortably seated, the mother came & happily placed baby Sisupāla on Sri Krsna’s lap. As soon as this was done, Sisupāl’s 2 extra arms fell to floor & eye on his forehead disappeared. At this time, the queen became highly alarmed & she begged-O Krsna! Pls favor me by always pardoning any offenses my son may commit in future. Sri Krsna replied-Dear Aunt! I can assure you that even if Sisupāl’s deserves to be killed, I will nonetheless pardon up to 100 of his offenses

Bhisma said-Bhima, I can assure you that Sisupāl’s offensive tantrum is inspired from within by the will of Lord Krsna. Therefore, be patient knowing that his death will soon be accomplished

When Sisupāla heard this, his anger flared & he continued to speak like a deranged man. He said-Bhisma! How dare you pass over the heads of such great heroes as Asvattāma, Karna, Duryodhana & Jaydrath to praise this cowherd boy as being Lord of the universe? You’re like bhulingā bird, who on one hand foolishly advises the lion to be cautious & at the same time picks out pieces of flesh between lion’s teeth as it eats. Similarly, you’re advising these lion-like kings upon whose mercy you depend to worship someone who is not at all worthy

Sisupāla then said to Krsna-Let us end our battle of words! I’m ready to kill You & your admirers Pāndavās. As Sisupāla paused, Krsna in a soft calm voice addressed assembly-O Kings! Because Sisupāl’s mother is my father’s sister. I’ve always treated him with extreme tolerance despite his enmity towards Yadu dynasty. Hear from me sinful acts he has committed

Once Sisupāla attacked Dvārkā & burnt a portion of the city. He stole horse to obstruct Ashvamedha sacrifice my father was conducting. He dishonored Akrura’s wife & Bhadrā, the princess of Visāla. I overlooked his many crimes due to my benediction to his mother. He even tried to marry Rukmini to give Me pain. It is fortunate that all of you have assembled here to see his real character, because I want to kill him without incurring public censure

Hearing Krsna, all kings harshly reproached Sisupāla, but he laughed & continued his banter thinking that he was so powerful that Krsna could do nothing in retaliation. Sri Krsna then thought of his Sudarshan Cakra & the blazing weapon immediately appeared. Krsna said-Sisupāla I’ve always excused you as I promised your mother to overlook 100 of your offenses, but now you’ve exceeded that limit. I’m going to kill you without further delay

Krsna then released the effulgent cakra & within a second Sisupāl’s severed head fell to the floor

In Bhagvad Gita Arjun asks-O Krsna, by what is one impelled to sinful acts, even unwillingly, as if engaged by force?

The Lord replies-It is lust only, which is born of contact with the material modes of passion & later transformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring, sinful enemy of this world

kama esa krodha esa!
