Ignorance!

When Sakuni taunted Yudhisthira after he lost himself in the gambling match despite having Draupadi to bet first, Yudhisthira said-I shall now stake princess of Pāncāla, who is like Laxmi herself & who possesses all virtues. Forgoing all pleasures, she is the first to rise up from bed in the morning & the last to retire at night. Having a compassionate nature & being sweet in speech, having curly bluish hair with eyes like lotus petals, she’s perfect wife. Making Draupadi the bet, I shall now continue to play
 
At this, a great wave of agitation passed through the assembly as everyone condemned Yudhisthira. Bhisma, Drona & Krpā were covered with perspiration & Vidura held his head between his hands like a deranged man. Dhritrāshtra was quite pleased. Being unable to conceal his feelings, he asked again & again: Has the bet been won?
 
Karna & Duhsāsana laughed with great relish while tears flowed from the eyes of all others in the assembly. Sakuni picked up the dice & while practically trembling with excitement cast them & declared – BEHOLD! I HAVE WON EVERYTHING
 
Sakuni is a vivid example of a totally shameless & ruthless person. At present we live in a society of cheaters & cheated
 
Srila Prabhupada insisted that one who is serious about advancing in spiritual life must follow four regulative principles
 
-      No gambling
-      No meat eating
-      No illicit sex
-      No intoxicants

These four principles are the root-cause of all evil. Here we can clearly see the evils of gambling

Yudhisthira, under a spell of madness lost everything he had, including his respect. Mode of ignorance is the opposite of mode of goodness. In mode of goodness, by development of knowledge, one can understand what is what, but the mode of ignorance is just the opposite. Everyone under the spell of mode of ignorance becomes mad, and a madman cannot understand what is what. Instead of making advancement, one becomes degraded

Mode of ignorance is a very peculiar qualification of the embodied soul. Everyone can see that his grandfather has died, and therefore he will also die; man is mortal. The children that he conceives will also die. So death is sure. Still, people are madly accumulating money & working very hard all day and night, not caring for the eternal spirit. This is madness. In their madness, they are very reluctant to make advancement in spiritual understanding. Such people are very lazy. When they are invited to associate for spiritual understanding, they are not much interested
