Free fall to destruction!
Considering himself already in the grips of Fate, Yudhisthira put forth another bet consisting of heaps of gold & silver. Duryodhana matched this & once again Sakuni rolled dice & declared that he won
Yudhisthira knew that Sakuni was employing unfair means & yet without even pausing he next staked his royal chariot which was equal to 1000 ordinary chariots. Again, Sakuni rolled dice & gleefully proclaimed victory. Yudhisthira then wagered 100 000 beautiful young maidservants who were fully decorated with valuable ornaments & adept in 64 arts including dancing & singing. Sakuni eagerly picked up the dice & while hardly trying to conceal his cheating tactics, rolled them to declare his win
Next Yudhisthira wagered 1000’s of male servants that were expert in ministering to the needs of guests. Sakuni rolled dice & joyfully declared victory. Then Yudhisthira bet 1000 gigantic elephants each having mark of a lotus flower on forehead & accompanied by 8 female elephants. As Sakuni rolled the dice, he laughed aloud declaring his win
Yudhisthira bet 1000 chariots with warriors, his celestial horses (given to Arjun by Chitratha), 60000 foot soldiers & 10000 oxcarts, piles of jewels and lost all of them. Duryodhana & his friends were overjoyed as Yudhisthira continued his path of self-destruction
Vidura leaned forward & advised Dhritrāshtra to allow Arjun to kill his wicked son. He reminded him how at his birth Duryodhana brayed like a jackal indicating his future role in destroying Kuru dynasty. Vidura said-O King! To save a family one member can be sacrificed, to save a village one family can be sacrificed, to save kingdom a village can be sacrificed & to save one’s soul one can renounce the entire universe. Sukrācharya gave this advise to demons to convince them to abandon Jambha at the time of his birth
You should be willing to exchange one crow-like son to gain 5 peacocks like Pāndavās. You should take advantage of your glorious nephews as gardener takes flowers everyday from a valuable tree. Don’t be like the fire producing wind that reduces precious tree to ashes. Your greedy son is just like an inexperienced & rash gatherer of honey who climbs a high mountain to approach bee hives but then falls down to his death
Vidura’s wisdom was somewhere lost on Dhritrāshtra due to his extreme attachment to his son. The seeds of deep enmity crossing all limits was sown for future destruction of Kurus at the Mahabharata war
While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises. From anger, complete delusion arises, and from delusion bewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost one falls down again into the material pool
