Envy

Hearing Yudhisthira’s pledge not to create enmity with others, his brothers praised him highly. All hoped to avoid the impending misfortune that was predicted by Vyāsdev

As they continued to reside within the assembly house built by Mayā Dānav, Duryodhana & Sakuni spent their time minutely examining every detail of the wonderful craftsmanship. They discovered many architectural designs that were not to be seen anywhere in their capital, Hastināpur. One day as he leisurely walked thro’ the palace, Duryodhana came to a crystal floor that looked just like water. After pulling up his garment as a precaution, he stepped onto the dry surface, but found that he was mistaken & felt ashamed and embarrassed

Subsequently Duryodhana came to a crystal pool filled with crystal lotus flowers. Thinking it to be like the dry floor previously encountered, he confidently stepped into pool & fell in water with his clothes on. Bhima happened to be present there & when he saw his cousin soaking wet, he laughed heartily & so did servants standing nearby. Other Pāndavās soon arrived & Yudhisthira immediately ordered new clothes to be brought for his cousin seeing his plight. But other Pāndavās joined Bhima in hilarity

Duryodhana was not accustomed to being insulted like this & so the laughter was unbearable for him. Still, he concealed his emotions & didn’t even once glance at Pāndavās. After putting on fresh clothes, he angrily walked away from the scene of his humiliation & once again mistook a crystal floor to be water. As he pulled up his garment, seeing his mistake Pāndavās again laughed. In this way Duryodhana’s humiliation became unbearable & it was great relief that he finally entered his room

Another day as he was walking, Duryodhana came to a crystal door that was so transparent, he thought it to be open. As he attempted to pass, he bumped his head with great force & lost his balance momentarily. He had similar other experiences at the assembly arena & was thus overwhelmed. When he finally departed for Hastināpur, he was filled with great envy & grief witnessing the incomparable opulence of the Pāndavās & their grand success of performing the Rājsuya sacrifice

Whenever Duryodhana remembered his mistakes, he had committed while residing in Pāndavās royal assembly, his face was flushed with embarrassment & terrible rage swelled in his heart. In this way his mind became sinfully contaminated. All he could do throughout entire day & night was to think about Pāndavās opulence & how they lived so happily while superseding him in all respects. His life became a living hell

Envy is the root cause of all wars including at Kurukshetra. Everyone appreciates others’ talents, success, wealth & good fortune but some are envious. In the material world, it’s a disease to be envious. Everyone has a certain position in life, a certain body & abilities because of his past activities. One who understands this as Karmic law laid down by Supreme, does not covet what is possessed by others. Envy means disregard the laws of Lord & instead attempt to improve one’s position by forcefully taking what belongs to others

This is demoniac!
