Advise!

Vidura continued his advise to Dhritrāshtra saying-Foolish Duryodhana does not realize the dire consequences of his sinful attempt to usurp the Pāndavās wealth. You shouldn’t be uselessly attached to such a wicked son! Kamsa was rejected by the other members of the Bhoja dynasty & when Sri Krsna killed him, everyone was overjoyed

Duryodhana overheard all this & so he responded very angrily by criticizing Vidura with harsh words saying-You’ve always favored the sons of Pāndu & slighted us. We’ve kept a poisonous snake on our laps all these years! Vidura, even though we have always pampered you, you still desire to harm us. You’re a parasite that lives off your elder brother. There is no need for you to give such unwanted advice!

Why should you always criticize me? There is only one Supreme controller, who guides even the baby within the mother’s womb. He is the supplier of intelligence & since everyone must follow his will, I’m also acting under His direction. You’re just like an unchaste wife who forsakes her husband in spite of being very well treated by him. Therefore, as far as I’m concerned, you’re no longer wanted here. You’re free to go wherever you choose

Vidura replied-Duryodhana, you consider yourself very wise but like a child you’re rejecting someone you maintained for so long, simply because of his unpalatable advice. The agreeable words uttered by foolish flatterers are easily had. On the other hand, sound advice, even though disagreeable is very rare & valuable. If all that you seek is pleasing words, regardless of good or evil, then take the advice of women, idiots & cripples!

If this is also Dhritrāshtra’s wish, I’m prepared to leave this fool’s paradise

It is natural for those who’re more experienced, mature, wiser, educated, intelligent to advise those who’re less experienced, mature, wise, educated or intelligent. Parents naturally advise children, teachers advise students, Leaders advise followers etc

Advise should be given for the benefit of the person advised & not for personal gain. Life is full of difficulties & so those who are wise & experienced should advise others to help them solve problems. When one advises a foolish person, he generally becomes angry just as giving milk to a serpent merely increases its poison. Fools do not want to understand truth
