3 Gates!

Duryodhana was so absorbed in his thoughts of envy for Pāndavās, that he stopped talking to anyone. Finally, as his uncle Sakuni persisted in enquiring about cause of his grief, Duryodhana revealed his heart. He said-I’m burning day & night in the fire of envy after beholding opulence of Pāndavās. I can’t even think of their prosperity & thus my whole existence has dried up

In one sense I know that there is no reason for me to be jealous of my cousins. I possess more wealth than I could ever hope to enjoy. Still when I saw how all the earth’s great kings came & paid tribute to Yudhisthira, I can’t help but envy his position. Then when abominable killing of my good friend Sisupāla was executed, a burning rage flared in my heart. Which hero could bear to see his enemies attain such influence & prosperity while he glides down into obscurity? I can no longer bear to go on living like this & so I shall commit suicide by drinking poison, enter fire or drown

Despite my determined efforts, I’ve obtained opposite result because Pāndavās have flourished more & more. In this I understand that Destiny is supreme & personal endeavor is useless. My heart is burning with anguish & because I can’t see anyone capable of helping me, my only recourse is to end my miserable existence. You can inform my father of my determination

Evil minded Sakuni, an expert psychologist & a first class diplomat, to incite Duryodhana, to accomplish his sinister plans, said in a duplicitous manner-O King! Pāndavās have performed many superhuman feats like winning of Draupadi, enabling Agni to devour Khāndav forest, acquisition of Gāndiva bow & other celestial weapons, building of assembly house by Mayā Dānav, subjugation of entire earth & performance of Rājsuya sacrifice. This has made their fame eclipse that of you & your brothers. Still, you shouldn’t be envious of them, for they are simple enjoying what is rightfully theirs

Sakuni paused for a moment & then with a devilish smile & a twinkle in his eyes said-On the other hand my dear nephew, if you feel unhappy because of their prosperity, you shouldn’t think that you’re impotent & helpless. After all I, your brothers, Karna, Drona, Krpā & many other powerful warriors are ready to support you in conquering entire world if you so desire

Duryodhana was desperate & so Sakuni’s optimism gave him renewed hope & he said-Let’s attack & defeat Pāndavās & then enjoy their opulence. Sakuni said-It would never be possible for us to defeat Pāndavās in direct conflict. Because of their allies, Krsna & Drupada, they are too powerful. However, there is another way they can be vanquished

The game of dice!

Krsna says in Gita:
tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśanam ātmanaḥ
kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet

There are 3 gates leading to this hell – lust, anger & greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to degradation of the soul

The beginning of demoniac life is described herein. One tries to satisfy his lust, & when he cannot, anger and greed arise. A sane man who does not want to glide down to the species of demoniac life must try to give up these 3 enemies, which can kill the self to such an extent that there will be no possibility of liberation from this material entanglement
