When King Brhadratha enquired about her identity, Jarā disclosed that she was creation of Brahmā named Grha-devi, the goddess presiding over households of humans. She said-I give great prosperity to those who paint my picture on wall & worship me with devotion & as because you worship me in palace temple, I favored you. Normally I devour bodies, but I joined 2 halves out of curiosity & when the child came to life, I spared him so that your long-cherished desire would be fulfilled
The King named his son Jarāsandha & held a grand festival in honor of Jarā. Soon Jarāsandha became a very powerful youth & his father made him king to retire in forest along with his wives to perform austerities
Krsna continued-Yudhisthira, because Jarāsandha is practically unconquerable on battlefield even by demigods, I recommend challenging him to a single combat with bare hands. For this purpose, I’d like Bhima & Arjun to accompany me to Magadha region. I’m sure if Bhima fights Jarāsandha, he’ll be victorious by My mercy
Yudhisthira had full faith in Lord Krsna & so he unhesitatingly gave consent. Thereafter Krsna, Bhima & Arjun set out to Magadha after disguising themselves as Brahmanas. When they arrived at Girivraja, the capital of Magadha, Krsna & the 2 Pāndavās broke off the peak of Caityaka mountain, which majestically towered over city & was worshipped by citizens. They entered the city from the gate which normally was reserved for the king
Meanwhile local priests observed many inauspicious omens & rushed to inform the King. As Krsna with Pāndavās (as Brahmanas) entered the palace, Jarāsandha was seated upon his throne. Conversant with Vedic values, he immediately got up to worship the 3 mendicants. He had water brought so that Brahmanas feet could be washed & gave them charity
Krsna said-O King! My 2 companions are observing a vow of silence today & will only speak with you after midnight. Jarāsandha closely observed the threesome & seeing their physical strength, their hands, said-By destroying Caityaka peak & entering without fear from wrong gate, it exhibits qualities of a Kshatriya. From your appearance & your behavior, I understand that you are not Brahmanas but Kshatriyas. Please tell me your real identities & purpose in coming, as truthfulness is also a virtue for kings
Krsna calmy replied-You should have understood by our actions that we have come not in friendship but enmity towards you. Jarāsandha said-I’ve never displeased any Brahmana ever so why enmity?
Krsna said-We’ve been sent by a virtuous king. How can you consider yourself innocent when you’re holding other kings captive with intention of offering them as human sacrifice to Lord Sivā? Who else but you would perform such an abominable act? Human sacrifices are never seen except amongst most degraded person. How can you consider members of your own order to be animals fit for sacrifice? Being virtuous we’ve come here to kill you to uphold Dharma & benefit others
The power of truth is huge. It distinguishes one from others & one should be fearless in speaking even in most adverse circumstances. One should always strive to find a way to establish Dharma in his own circle of influence, inspiring others to do the same
We should speak truth to open eyes & hearts of people & not to shut their mouth or minds
