Jumping to conclusion!
After worshipping various deities at
Raivataka hill, Subhadrā was on her return journey to Dvāraka. All of sudden
Arjun appeared on the scene & after forcibly taking Subhadrā on his
chariot, he hastened towards Indraprastha. The armed guards of the princess,
helpless in the situation returned to Dvāraka & reported everything to chief
officer at the Sudharmā royal assembly. Hearing the alarming news, the officer
loudly blew the trumpet signaling all to be armed. All Yādav heroes immediately
poured into the assembly
Officer described with great
agitation the nefarious deed performed by Arjun, which caused uproar & without
even bothering to discuss the matter, Yādavas called for chariots &
weapons. Balarāma quickly stood up & restrained the assembly & said-As
all of you are acting rashly, Krsna is sitting here silently
He turned towards his younger
brother & said-Dear Krsna! Why you’re silent? Arjun was lavishly
entertained by us & now in return of our hospitality has greatly insulted
the Yadu dynasty by kidnapping our sister. This cannot be tolerated & I
hereby vow to single-handedly rid the world of entire Kauravas once & for
all. Hearing this, all Vrsnis, Bhojas & Andhakas let out a great roar of
approval
When things quieted down a bit,
Krsna said-My dear assembly heroes! Arjun has not insulted our family but
instead has enhanced our reputation. He considered that to give away a daughter
in charity is a demeaning act. Therefore considering the fault of this type of
marriage, he decided to take Subhadrā by force, because that is considered to
be an honorable display of valor for heroic Kshatriyas
Arjun has taken birth in a dynasty of
exalted saintly kings. Indeed, he is said to be the direct son of Indrā, the
king of heaven. Besides his prowess is unparalleled & only Lord Sivā can
vanquish him in battle. I consider the Pāndav hero to be most worthy friend
& ally. Now let us go & make peace with Arjun & bring him back to
Dvāraka, so that the marriage can be celebrated with great festivity
The Yādavās became pacified by Krsna’s
speech & they peacefully brought Arjun back & arranged for him to be
united with Subhadrā in marriage
Do we also act in haste being overcome
with quick conclusions?
Jumping can be dangerous if we don’t
measure our jump & thus injure ourselves. But more dangerous than this physical
jump is to jump to conclusions without careful considerations. We may jump relevant
facts, interpretation of our observation & arrive at a negative conclusion.
We then see situation in altogether a different light leading to catastrophe
When
we jump to conclusions, we leave solid evidence of facts & land on
inferences about others’ motivations and even dispositions. Our labeling
irritates & alienates them and thus causes small tensions to escalate to huge
conflicts, even wars, be they personal or professional
To
avoid jumping to such conclusions, we need to cultivate a positive attitude
towards others, trying to see good in them. People in mode of goodness are
averse to fault finding
