Help others to help yourself!

Krsna & Arjun were sitting together when a Brāhmana appeared before them. He had golden complexion & appeared splendorous despite being dressed in rags & having matted hair. He was welcomed & said-I reside here in forest & being a voracious eater I approach you in hope that you’ll give me enough food so that I can eat to my full satisfaction. Arjun said-If it is within our power, we’ll certainly satisfy you in all respects but tell me first what food you want?

Brāhmana sad-It’s not ordinary food that I crave. I’m Agni, God of fire & I want to devour Khāndava forest. This forest is under protection of Indra & I tried to consume it many times, but the king of heaven always foils my attempt. If you can kindly prevent Indra from pouring rain & prevent residents of forest from escaping, I will attain my desire

But why was Agni eager to devour forest? There was King named Svetaki, whose heart was always inclined to perform sacrifices. He did so many Yagyas one after other that priests finally left becoming blind from smoke & exhausted. Svetaki then approached Lord Sivā at mount Kailash & worshipped him with determination. After 6 months, Sivā became pleased & when King requested assistance in his sacrifices, he refused saying he never engages in such work

Still SIvā sent his partial incarnation, Durvāsa muni & in this way a 100-year sacrifice was completed. However, as Agni had to drink ghee continuously for 12 years, he became ill with loss of appetite forcing him to abandon acceptance of offerings from other sacrifices. He became pale & approached Brahmā & explained his situation that his energy is greatly diminished. He requested help to regain his normal healthy condition

Brahmā advised Agni to devour Khāndava forest & he’ll be cured of his disease by consuming fat of living creatures residing there. Agni went with Vāyu & soon whole forest was ablaze, but inhabitants of forest made all out efforts to extinguish fire somehow. Agni made 6 more attempts, but each time fire was somehow put out. In frustration Agni went to Brahmā again explaining his failed attempts. Brahmā advised that Sri Krsna & Arjun would help him soon

Agni thus approached them in the guise of Brāhmana. Arjun said-As I’ve promised to feed you to your satisfaction, I’m prepared to fight with even demigods. But Arjun said he doesn’t have bow that matches his strength, quiver of arrows & chariot with celestial horses. Also befitting weapon for Krsna which matches his unlimited strength. Agni presented Arjun with Gāndiva bow with inexhaustible quivers & a celestial chariot. Sri Krsna received the Sudarshan Cakra

Multicolored bow Gāndiva was chief of all weapons equal to 100 000 ordinary bows. The chariot was engineered by Visvakarmā & was dazzling, drawn by silver steeds which could travel at speed of mind. Arjun received these which made all the difference in the biggest war of his life, the Mahābharata war

When one has genuine desire to help others, he receives support which then becomes a game changer for all his efforts to win his battles. Our burning desire itself finds ways & means to succeed. Helping others means helping the self & exploring unchartered opportunities for rich experience
