Efforts!

Maya Dānava was exceedingly grateful to Arjun for rescuing him from wrath of Sri Krsna & Agni & so he repeatedly begged for opportunity to render some service in return. Arjun said-your sincere gratitude itself is sufficient reward for what I’ve done. You’re now free to go wherever you please

However, Maya Dānava was determined to reward Arjun & so he explained-I’m considered to be Visvakarmā of Dānavas & can accomplish wonders in engineering field. Kindly allow me to utilize my abilities by doing something spectacular for you. Seeing his eagerness, Arjun said-I don’t want anything from you but I also don’t like to see your ardent desire to go unfulfilled. If you want, you can render some service to Sri Krsna & in this way your talents will fulfill their actual purpose

Maya turned to Sri Krsna & said-My dear Lord please order me. What Shall I do to please you? Sri Krsna thought for a moment & then commanded-I want you to build an incomparable sabhā (assembly hall) for King Yudhisthira. This engineering masterpiece should be a synthesis of godly, human & asuric architectural style. It must be so grandly constructed that never before had anyone seen, nor in future will anyone see such a marvel

Maya was very happy to receive this order & returned to Indraprastha. He drew up plans for the royal assembly & then on an auspicious day performed the ritualistic ceremony for laying the foundation. He then applied himself to the practical details of the construction

Maya approached Arjun to ask permission to go to Vindu Lake, located north of Kailāsa, near mount Mainaka. The Dānava king Vrsparvā had formerly resided there & once after performing a great sacrifice, left huge quantities of jewels in his palace. Maya wanted to use those gems in construction. In addition, great club of Vrsparvā equal to 100 000 ordinary clubs was placed in waters of Vindu lake, which Maya wanted to gift to Bhima. Also in lake was a great conch shell named Devdutta, a gift for Arjun

Maya took all the jewels from Vrsparvā’s palace & retrieved the club & conch shell from Vindu Lake. After gathering numerous other valuable materials, he returned to Indraprastha & gave club to Bhima & conch shell to Arjun. He began construction of the assembly hall with materials he collected

He built the hall with columns of solid gold & it was so effulgent that it diminished the glare of the Sun. The hall appeared to be on fire because of its splendor. In the middle of the hall was a delightful pond where exotic birds & tortoises sported in crystal clear water. The pond was decorated with flowers having stalks of gems & leaves of gold. Stairs of crystal led down to the water & gentle breeze caused the flowers to tremble

Our skills should always be used for the service of the Supreme Lord. Whenever we do anything, we have various levels of motivation & depending on how deep our motivation is, we persevere in that activity when we face obstacles. If appreciation is the only motivation for our service, it only builds our false ego. But if our work is driven by a higher principle of satisfying the Supreme Lord, then our efforts are most fulfilling & absorbing. We use our best intelligence to serve & the outcome is cherished & relished
