Consequences!

Arjun after some time was eager to see Citrāngada again & returned to Manipura. As he entered the royal palace, he saw his son Babhruvāhana sitting upon the throne. After a brief stay, Arjuna left Manipura & travelled to holy places on the shore of western ocean including Gokarna. He finally came to Prabhāsa & when Sri Krsna heard that his dear friend had come, he went to meet him. When they met, embraced each other with great fraternal love. Arjun then described to Krsna all about his travels

Krsna & Arjun remained together at Prabhāsa for some days & then went to Raivataka mountain, which was gorgeously decorated under Krsna’s direction for a festival. Actors & dancers performed there & both friends enjoyed it. Arjun & Krsna are eternally related as dear friends & are incarnations of Nara & Nārayana Rsis. Next morning Krsna took Arjun on his golden chariot for Dvārka, which was especially decorated in Arjun’s honor

Hundreds of thousands of citizens thronged the streets to welcome & Arjun felt great transcendental ecstasy witnessing the incomparable mercy of his friend, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krsna. Arjun offered his respects to elder members of Vrsni, Bhoja & Andhaka dynasties & embraced those who were his age. He passed many days in great happiness in association with Krsna at his palace

Both friends spent their time together & one day happened to come to where Subhadra, Krsna’s sister, was seated surrounded by maidservants. As soon as Arjun saw her, he became enamored by her beauty & grace. Krsna saw how Arjun longingly fixed his gaze upon his sister & said-Can the heart of such a great warrior be pierced by the arrows of Cupid? If you so desire, I can ask my father for Subhadra’s hand in marriage on your behalf

Arjun blushed & said-Endowed with such beauty, I’m captivated by Subhadra. Please tell me the means whereby I’ll be able to attain her without fail. I’m ready to accomplish anything humanly possible to have her as my wife. Krsna said-Holding of Swayamvara is customary for Kshatriya’s like us but in this case, outcome would be uncertain as the girl’s inclination is not yet known. On the other hand, it is customary for Kshatriya to kidnap the girl he desires & this is also considered virtuous

I hence advise you to kidnap Subhadra because it is uncertain whether she would select you if the choice were hers, said Krsna. A speedy messenger was sent to Yudhisthira informing him of Arjun’s intention. As the suggestion was fromKrsna himself, Yudhisthira unhesitatingly gave his approval. Subhadra’s father Vasudev also consented & with everyone’s blessings, Arjun put on his armor, mounted a chariot equipped with weapons

Principles of Dharma vary according to time, place & circumstances. So desh, kaal, patra and course of Dharma for Kshatriyas are different from the course of Dharma of what our conceptions of morality today. Arjun asked his elders & got consent before acting. Kshatriyas are known for chauvinism & heroism & abduction is an expression of that. Krsna knew that Subhadra had a liking for Arjun & his elder brother had fixed her marriage to Duryodhana. He thus facilitated the marriage as per code of conduct

We also should act as per the bigger picture. Our actions may seem at odds to the immediate arrangements but should have long serving consequences
