To serve
Pāndavās wandered from forest to forest & passed thro' many kingdoms such as Pāncālas, Trigartas & Matsyas. Keeping matted hair & dressed in tree bark & deerskin, they appeared like sages
One day Vyāsadev appeared before Kunti & her sons. He said-By my spiritual vision I’ve understood everything about how you’re deceitfully exiled by Duryodhana. Both you & Kauravas are equal in my eyes but due to your misfortune at hands of evil sons of Dhritrāshtra, I’m inclined to act for your welfare. I want that now you go to nearby town of Ekchakra & live there incognito until I come again to see you
As he led Pāndavās along forest path, he comforted Kunti saying-You be rest assured that one day your son Yudhisthira will become emperor of entire earth. Don’t be discouraged by present difficulties
Finally after bringing Pāndavas to house of one Brāhmana at Ekchakra, Vyāsdev left. Pāndavās began residing there & during day wandered as mendicants. Every evening when 5 brothers would return home, they presented whatever they collected to their mother. She in turn would divide everything amongst her other sons after giving Bhima half
One day Bhima stayed at home with Kunti, while others went out. They heard heart rending cries coming from Brāhman’s room. Kunti couldn’t remain indifferent knowing that their hosts were suffering. She went to find out what was troubling them
The Brāhmana lamented wailing loudly-To hell with this worldly life full of misery. The acquisition of wealth is a great struggle & once it is attained, there is always anxiety due to fear of its loss. The family of 4 including a daughter & small son were much aggrieved due to their situation where one of them would have to die
As Kunti asked reason for their distress, Brāhmana explained-Near our town lives a fierce demon named Bakā. Because of his unrivaled prowess, we have no fear of enemies. However, in return he demands that we supply with all his food. Thus, everyday by rotation a family sends one of its members to be devoured by demon after delivering him a cartload of rice & 2 buffaloes. If someone tries to avoid sending one of his kinsmen, he comes & devours entire family. Tomorrow it’s our turn to deliver food
Kunti said believe me when I say that there is a way to avoid this calamity. One of my sons will go to the demon tomorrow with supply of food. I’ve seen my sons kill many demons so don’t worry. You’ll be shortly freed from this oppression
People who are always in service of others are surely blessed by the Supreme powers. They follow the path ordained by elders as per scriptural guidance. Our humility to follow higher principles & elevated guidance makes us strong. The intent to serve others selflessly & as a duty is justice to all what we have, be it skills, prowess, money, or intelligence. That is the best use of being custodians of what we have
We are just caretakers for serving others & not ourselves
