Temptations!

Dhritrāshtra argued with Duryodhana-If we try to exile Pāndavās even gently as you propose, Bhisma, Krpā & Vidura will never allow it. His son countered-You can be assured that Bhisma will remain neutral because he is grandfather to all of us. And since Asvattāma is on our side, Drona will not interfere & thus Krpā will also remain silent. Now as far as Vidura is concerned, although he favors Pāndavās, he is dependent upon us & so can’t do any harm

Dhritrāshtra thus was convinced by his wicked son to give permission for exile of Pāndavās. Duryodhana & his brothers then began to win over citizens with gifts & honorable positions. Also, clever ministers began describing in royal assembly about festival to honor Lord Shiva which would soon be held in Vārnavata. After repeatedly hearing about that place as very charming, Pāndavās developed a desire to go there & see it

When Dhritrāshtra understood this, he called his nephews & invited them to go there for a vacation. Intelligent Yudhisthira could understand his uncle’s real intention still he obediently accepted proposal

Duryodhana then summoned minister Purocana & said-If you help me execute a clever plan for exterminating my enemies, I promise to share with you my kingdom & its immense wealth. You need to construct a very beautiful palace with inflammable material like shellac, ghee, dry grass, oil & wood at Vārnavata. This mansion will serve as residence of Pāndavās. It needs to be built in such a way that although living in it, Pāndavās can’t guess that it is meant for their destruction

Furnish it lavishly so that anyone would be happy to reside there. You continue to remain at Vārnavata attending to their needs & gain their confidence. After this is accomplished, set fire to palace at night beginning from outer door while my cousins & their mother are asleep. Thus, it would look like an accident that they are burnt to death

Purocana readily agreed to take part in the plan & immediately set out to Vārnavata. Pāndavās, before leaving first went to touch the feet of elders including Dhritrāshtra, Bhisma, Drona, Krpā & Vidura. It was with some remorse that Pāndavās left Hastināpur. Vidura as well as many citizens followed them out of the city. Everyone knew about wicked intentions of Dhritrāshtra who was now fully under sway of partiality towards his sons

Temptations coaxes us to commit the most heinous of crimes. It is like the voice of someone other than us who wants something different from us. It speaks from inside us pretending what it wants is what we want. Once we start listening to it then it takes us for a ride to commit doing acts which otherwise we will not do in sane mind. It holds sway over us

What we need to understand is that temptations can’t coerce us. It can raise it’s voice but cannot dislodge us from decision making. It just acts as an impersonator & we need to realize that it’s not our voice & its intention is not our decision
