Sreya & Preya
Drupada after his release by Drona, continued to rule south Pāncālas. But at heart his only desire was to take revenge, although he was convinced that he would never be able to do so with his Kshatriya prowess. Feeling himself incapable, he left his kingdom & wandered over earth with hope of finding way to obtain a child who would defeat Drona
Drona began residing at Ahicchatra, Drupada’s former capital
A year later Dhritrāshtra elected Yudhisthira as successor to royal throne moved by feeling of compassion for citizens. He knew that Yudhisthira was a reservoir of good qualities & appreciated the fact that he would make a far better king than his own son Duryodhana. It was during this period that Bhima received instructions from Lord Balarāma in the art of fighting with club
Dronācharya one day appeared at royal court in Hastināpur & in front of all Kaurav princes said to Arjun-Long ago I’d received Brahmāstra from sage Agnivesya. When you were student under my care, I passed knowledge of it to you & now want you to reward me for that special gift. Arjun hesitatingly consented & so Drona said-It is known to me that at some time in future, I’ll be obliged to fight against you. My request is that you fight wholeheartedly against me at that time. Arjun agreed & in great reverence touched feet of his guru
Arjun travelled all over world & with assistance of Bhima subjugated many kings of numerous lands, bringing immense wealth back to Hastināpur & depositing it in the treasury of Kurus. The great prowess & influence that Pāndavas exhibited caused Dhritrāshtra to become anxious & morose. The blind king called his chief minister Kanikā & said-Again & again my nephews accomplish wonderful feats that is superior to anything my sons do
My heart burns with envy due to this & I can't find any relief.Should I try to keep friendly relations with my nephews or should I deal with them as my enemies? What will bring me happiness? Kanikā advised-You should act in such a way that your sons are always protected from Pāndavās. For this you can employ any of the 4 means of dealing with those you consider as enemies. In this way you’ll not grieve for your sons later
Dhritrāshtra considered himself to be the king of Kurus but acted only as benefactor of his sons, whom he himself knew were inferior to his nephews
There are 2 things-Sreya & Preya
Sreya means ultimate benefit & preya means immediate profit. Just like children want to play all day long that is preya, but parents know that they must go to school & learn in order to become educated, which in long run will be beneficial for them, that is sreya
Preya kind of happiness is very transitory & will taste like nectar in beginning but in the end will feel like poison
Sreya leads to ultimate benefit. By engaging oneself with patience & confidence, performing austerities, one can achieve highest Sreya, which seems like poison at first but is nectar at the end
Choice is ours!
