Modes of nature!

 

With Duryodhana coming to Karna’s rescue by anointing him king of Anga, their alliance became solidly cemented. As Karna prepared to fight with Arjun, charioteer Adhiratha entered the arena. Supporting himself with his staff, he was perspiring heavily & trembled due to fatigue. As soon as Karna saw his foster father, he went towards him with great affection. Adhiratha expressed his great joy at seeing his son proclaimed as king

 

When Bhima understood that Karna was son of a charioteer, he taunted him by saying-O Suta, you don’t deserve to fight with Arjun. Instead pick up a whip & remain in your rightful position. How dare you even think of sitting on the throne of Anga? You no more deserve to rule a kingdom than a dog deserves to eat libations of ghee offered in sacrifice

 

Listening to this insult Karna gazed at the Sun as his lips quivered with rage. Duryodhana also became very agitated & said to Bhima-Heroism is real qualification of a Kshatriya & not birth. There are many persons of lower or unknown birth who became elevated to exalted positions because of superior qualities & character. Visvamitra who was a Kshatriya by birth was later recognized as a Brahmarsi

 

Because of superior prowess, Karna deserves to rule entire earth. If anyone objects to his being elected as the king of Anga, then I’ll accept this as a personal challenge. The crowd highly approved his words, but as Sun had already set, Duryodhana thought it best to forgo further strife & escorted Karna out of arena

 

Pāndavās with Bhisma, Drona & Krpā also returned home. As crowd dispersed, some people named Arjun, some Karna & some Duryodhana as hero of the day. Kunti had recognized her son because of his natural armor & earrings and was highly pleased by his acceptance as a king. After witnessing Karna’s unparalleled prowess & skill, Duryodhana gave up all fear of Pāndavās, while Yudhisthira became filled with anxiety believing that none on earth was equal to Karna

 

The test arrived soon to decide about who was better-Kauravās or Pādavās

 

Dronācharya decided to ask for his guru-dakshinā & assembling all disciples said-Since it is the duty of the student to reward his spiritual master, I request you to go and seize Drupada, the king of Pāncalās & deliver him to me alive. All princes were very enthusiastic to satisfy their guru & so started out at once with Dronācharya accompanying them

 

Krsna says in Gita-Catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah

According to the three modes of material nature and the work ascribed to them, the four divisions (Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya & Sudra)of human society were created by Me

 

Human society is similar to any other animal society, but to elevate men from the animal status, the divisions are created by the Lord for the systematic development of Krsna consciousness. The tendency of a particular man toward work is determined by the modes of material nature which he has acquired

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made. Duryodhana flattered Salya by comparing him to Lord Brahmā, who formerly became Shiva’s charioteer at the time of destroying Tripura   Duryodhana concluded his long talk by saying: Dear Salya, Parasurāma delivered the entire science of weapons to Karna.   Krsna’s plan!   As Asvattāma asked Krpa about what happened to his father Drona, with great anguish Krpa said: My dear Asvattāma, your father was killed by Dhrishtadyumna. Knowing Drona to be invincible as long as he would wield his weapons, Sri Krsna ordered Yudhisthira to falsely inform him of your death. When your father heard this shocking news, he put down his weapons. Seeing this Dhrishta rushed at him brandishing his sword.
