Intelligence!

One day when Yudhisthira was fully convinced that Purocana had been deceived by their mild behavior, he told his brothers-Now is the time for us to act. Let us burn down the palace at night while Purocana is sleeping. We can escape undetected thro’ underground tunnel. Soon after Kunti invited many Brahmanās at the palace to serve them & give them charity. After being fed sumptuously Brahmanās took permission & returned home

It so happened as if ordained by fate that a NIsāda woman along with her 5 sons came to the palace. After eating remnants, she together with her sons fell asleep somewhere in the corner of palace. That night after all had gone to bed & it was quiet, a violent wind suddenly came up just when Bhima set fire near where Purocana was sleeping. He also set fires at the palace’s only entrance & other places so that the building was quickly engulfed in flames

Queen Kunti & her sons then entered the secret tunnel & escaped the conflagration thro’ underground passage. After some time residents of Vārnavata awoke & when they saw the gutted palace, they condemned Duryodhana, thinking him to be responsible

Meanwhile Pāndavās & their mother came out of the tunnel somewhere in the surrounding forest. After walking for some time, Bhima took his mother on his shoulder & brothers Nakul Sahadev on his hips as they were tired. As they reached Gangā, they carefully measured its depth to see if they could cross to other side. Just then a trusted person sent by Vidura arrived with a boat & helped them cross the river

Meanwhile at Vārnavata after extinguishing fire, when town people searched thro’ the smoldering debris, they found Purocana had been burnt to death. They also saw the charred remains of Nisāda women & her 5 sons. The tunnel was covered carefully & no clue of it was found by anyone. Everyone harshly condemned Dhritrāshtra & sent a message to the blind king informing him that Purocana, Kunti & her 5 sons have been burnt to death

When Dhritrāshtra received the news, he was genuinely mortified & immediately sent some men to Vārnavata to perform the funeral ceremonies. He offered water for the benefit of his departed nephews & their mother & wept aloud with grief. Vidura didn’t cry as he knew the real situation

After crossing Gangā, Pāndavās disguised themselves as Brahmanās so that Duryodhana’s spies cannot detect them. They then entered a dense & uninhabited forest. Kunti lamented that despite being the mother of 5 heroic sons, she is burning with thirst. Bhima was pained & as he meditated upon how their forced exile was the work of evil Duryodhana, his desire to kill him strongly aroused

To be ahead of our adversaries, we need to be vigilant not only of their position but also of ours. Here intelligence plays a key role rather than our mind. As emotions sway the mind, it acts very fast & takes our thoughts from one direction to entirely opposite direction. We may contemplate on noble thoughts at one moment & on extremely immoral fantasies on the other

To curb such a wild mind, our intelligence must be trained to act faster. With an alert intelligence, fickle mind can be kept under control whenever it wanders & our actions are then effective. Devotional diligence keeps us intellectually vigilant
