Finding way out!
As Pāndavās left Hastināpur, citizens talked amongst themselves expressing their great unhappiness at imminent separation from Queen Kunti & her prodigious sons. Yudhisthira persuaded the citizens to turn back.
Vidura, who understood wicked Kauravās simply by seeing their faces, spoke to Yudhisthira in mlechha language so that others wouldn’t understand & said-My dear nephew! He who knows evil plans that his enemies contrive in accordance with science of politics should act so as to avoid danger. He who knows that there are weapons not made of steel & who understands how to avoid them, escapes calamity at hands of his enemies
Be on guard, make your abode like that of a jackal having many outlets. That which consumes straw & wood and evaporates water cannot harm who stays within a hole, deep within woods. Although Vidura’s words were apparently vague-Yudhisthira assured his uncle that he understood it’s meaning. After Vidura returned to Hastināpur, Kunti approached her son & said-What were you talking about with Vidura? I couldn’t understand his words at all
Yudhisthira replied-Uncle warned me of an inflammable mansion that is being prepared for us at Vārnavata & also gave me means for our escape at a proper time. When Pāndavās arrived at Vārnavata, they paid respects to Brahmanās & other senior citizens. When they arrived at palace Purocana had constructed, the wicked minister respectfully received them & gave them sumptuous feast. Pāndavās began residing in palace made of shellac & soon they were adored by all citizens there
Because Vidura had warned them, Pāndavās carefully inspected their residence at first opportunity. Yudhisthira clearly could discern the smell of ghee & fat & said to Bhima-The palace appears to be made entirely of inflammable materials soaked in ghee. As Bhima suggested to leave the palace, Yudhisthira intelligently said-I think it would be better for us to remain here pretending to be unsuspecting but actually alert. You should secretly begin constructing an underground tunnel so that we can save ourselves in the event of fire
Every day as we roam countryside, we should familiarize ourselves with the land so that we know proper paths & directions. Soon after a skillful miner was sent by Vidura, who came to Pāndavās & said-I have been warned that this place would be burnt down when the new moon fails to brighten the night. Let me construct a tunnel for your escape from this palace in that event
The construction of the tunnel began at night & Pāndavās appeared to be living a carefree life. But they were constantly on alert & slept with their weapons close at hand
We should always think ahead of our adversary’s plan. This takes lot of patience and intelligence and intent to take the advice of seniors and elders. When we follow the path of truth & higher principles, that itself makes us strong to remain focused on the problems at hand and find answers with a determined mind. The fight is determined mostly by our mind, but deciding what to change and how to go about changing it requires prudence, which the mind sorely lacks
To be prudent, we need to focus on most important war-to stay connected with our indwelling Super soul, in a mood of loving service. By devotional disposition, we become receptive to his guidance from within. Being thus guided, we can carefully choose to fight those battles that make things better, not worse
