Desires!


After Bhima killed Bakā, town people were overjoyed but the Brāhmana didn’t disclose identity of Bhima as per his solemn promise. He said that an exalted sage listened to how Bakā was causing grief & volunteered to deliver food & then slayed the demon


Pāndavās continued to live at the house of their host & after some time another Brāhmana arrived & he also became a guest. One day Kunti & her sons approached this Brāhmana & requested him to narrate any interesting experience during his extensive travels. He narrated story of Drstyadhyumna, Shikhandi & Draupadi & princess’s soon to be held Swayamvara


The story goes-After Drupada was captured by Arjun & brought before Drona, he promised his eternal friendship & then departed. The great humiliation experienced never left Drupada’s mind & his lamentation was enhanced by the fact that he was childless. He travelled all over world with hope to find someone with superior prowess who could help him. Once while wandering at banks of Gangā, he met 2 sages named Yaja & Upyaja & soon became convinced that they’re competent to help


Of the 2, Upyaja was younger & superior, & Drupada served him by offering every inconceivable object of human desire. But when Drupada asked him to perform a sacrifice that enables him to get a son, he declined saying that he’s not capable of performing it. Drupada still served with hope that sage will agree. One day Upyaja informed that his brother Yaja is greedy for material gains & he recommends Drupada approaches him


Although Drupada didn’t have high estimation for Yaja, still he went & humbly explained about his desire to obtain a son to kill Drona. He promised reward of 10000 cows & whatever else is desired. Yaja happily agreed & as sacrifice was difficult to perform, he solicited his younger brother’s help. The sacrifice commenced & oblations of ghee were poured & mantras chanted. At the end Yaja picked up sanctified prasada & commanded queen to come forward for son & daughter


As Yaja poured oblations, a male child miraculously rose out of flames. The effulgent boy was like demigod with a crown on head, sword & bow in hands, roaring with great enthusiasm. Immediately after birth, the remarkable & impetuous child mounted a chariot & set out. Pāncālas became mad with joy seeing the boy. A voice from sky proclaimed that child is born for Drona’s destruction & will dispel unhappiness of Drupada


If our desires are misdirected, they cause extreme distress & put us into a perpetual anxiety. We need to have desires, but it should not be for material gains but for spiritual growth. To see desires in perspective, we need to revise our vision of the ultimate spiritual reality. It’s not a state of desireless peace but is a state of joyful love. Love is impossible without desire & we do our best for our beloved’s pleasure

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made.   Krsna’s plan!   As Asvattāma asked Krpa about what happened to his father Drona, with great anguish Krpa said: My dear Asvattāma, your father was killed by Dhrishtadyumna. Knowing Drona to be invincible as long as he would wield his weapons, Sri Krsna ordered Yudhisthira to falsely inform him of your death.
