When lost!

 

Drona became enraged when Drupada, intoxicated with false pride didn’t recognize friendship with him. Still without uttering a single word in retaliation, he turned his back & departed. Drona then conceived a plan to cut Drupada’s false pride & with that in mind he set out for Hastināpur. For some time he stayed at his brother-in-law Krpā’s house, remaining unrecognized by others

 

As Krpā taught military science to Pāndavās & Kauravās, Drona’s son Asvattāma also attended classes & at break time taught students as well, but no one knew his real prowess. One day Pāndava & Kaurav princes went out to the countryside. It then happened that the ball they were playing fell accidentally into a deep well. Princes tried their best to retrieve it but couldn't do so. As they argued about what to do, an old thin Brāhmana with dark complexion approached them

 

The person was Drona & as boys surrounded him, he started to chastise them. Drona said-You Kshatriyās are proud of your strength, but as I see that you cannot even recover the ball from well. If you like I will get it for you using some blades of grass & in return promise to give me sumptuous dinner. The boys consented and Drona took off his ring & threw it in well & then picked some blades of grass. After investing them with power of some mantra, he threw one blade of grass into the well & miraculously it pierced the ball

 

Then as Drona threw more blades, they formed a chain & he easily pulled the ball out of the well. The princes were astonished at this feat. They then asked Drona to bring his ring up from the bottom of well. Drona picked a bow & arrow & after piercing the ring he brought it up effortlessly. The boys bowed to him in respect & asked-Please tell us who you are if you think we are worthy of knowing your identity. We want to serve you

 

Drona said-Go to Bhisma & describe your meeting with me. I’m sure that my identity will be disclosed in this way. The princes returned to Hastināpur & described with great enthusiasm all that had happened. When Bhisma heard description of Brāhmana, he at once understood who he was & immediately went to welcome Dronācharya, as the guru for young princes

 

The plan of Drona was taking shape!

 

When in life we come to an unexpected intersection, which is outside of our plan, we need to be humble enough for introspection & then plan the path forward. When we find ourselves moved in unplanned direction by forces beyond our control, by people whom we cannot influence, then it’s better to take unchartered course, a new way & try to synchronize with reality

 

We need to constantly calibrate our alignment to the big picture, the bigger purpose & acknowledge the knowledge of our ignorance. Arjuna also went thro’ the same phase and he surrendered himself to the will of the Supreme Lord, acknowledging his limited understanding of the grand plan of war of good over evil

 

We will then find way!

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made. Real compassion! Duryodhana who was hiding inside the lake, became very depressed hearing the bitter words from Yudhisthira, but since there was no alternative, he finally made up his mind to accept Yudhisthira’s challenge & fight.
