Sense to Senseless!

As Vasus made plea to Gangā to be born from her womb, but to be immediately drowned in water, Gangā said-I’ll do it since it's your desire, but one of my sons must live a long life so that relationship with my husband may not go in vain. Vasus said, each of us will give 1/8th of our energies to produce that son that’ll live a full life. But it’s our wish that he’ll not produce any children. Gangā agreed

King Pratipa performed austerities at the source of Gangā for many years. One day, much to his surprise Gangā came & sat on his right thigh. Astonished King asked about her intention & she replied with her desire to become his wife. I’m not willing to give up my austerities, said Pratipa & proposed that she can marry his future son to which she agreed on condition, that after their marriage, her husband should never judge propriety of her acts. The King gave consent

In due course, Pratipa’s wife gave birth to a son, who was named Sāntanu as he had been conceived while his father was engaged in controlling senses. When Sāntanu grew up, Pratipa told him about his meeting with Gangā, whom he should accept as his future wife with a condition, never to judge her actions else she’ll immediately leave him

Pratipa soon installed Sāntanu upon royal throne & retired for holy pilgrimage. One day while roaming on banks of Gangā, Sāntanu happened to meet a beautiful girl that appeared to be wandering at will. He was smitten by her & the girl (who was Gangā) also became attracted to him. When King proposed her to become his wife, Gangā said she could, provided he accepts her condition of never interfering with whatever she does agreeable or otherwise & never say unkind words to her. If he speaks reproachfully to her, she’ll leave him at once

Having been under sway of Gangā’s beauty, the King agreed to her demands without even giving proper consideration or even knowing her actual identity. Newlywed couple enjoyed life together with great pleasure. The King was enraptured by his wife’s feminine charms. Time flew!

Sāntanu begot 7 sons in due course of time. However just after birth, newborn babies were thrown into river by Gangā. The King was extremely aggrieved, but he dared not object else his wife would leave him. However, when Gangā was about to drown their 8th child, Sāntanu could not restrain his anger & said-Hard hearted woman! Desist from this cruel act

When we lose ourselves to our senses, they take over

Krsna says in BG

yatato hy api kaunteya puruṣasya vipaścitaḥ

indriyāṇi pramāthīni haranti prasabhaṁ manaḥ

The senses are so strong and impetuous, O Arjuna, that they forcibly carry away the mind even of a man of discrimination who is endeavoring to control them

tāni sarvāṇi saṁyamya yukta āsīta mat-paraḥ

vaśe hi yasyendriyāṇi tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā

One who restrains his senses, keeping them under full control, and fixes his consciousness upon Me, is known as a man of steady intelligence
