Not to our liking!
After both her sons died, Satyavati told Bhishma-The Kuru race now depends entirely upon you, for you are last surviving male member. I therefore want you to beget children upon your stepbrothers’ widows. After doing so, you may also marry & ascend throne to rule the kingdom
Although the request was in line with virtue, Bhishma said-I've made vow at time of your marriage to King Sāntanu to not ascend throne. I’ll never renounce truth, even though the earth may give up its quality of scent & water, it's quality of moisture. Satyavati said-This is a grave emergency & so act in such a way that our dynasty will continue
Bhishma pondered over how his family wouldn’t become extinct & his vow of Brahmacharya also remains intact too. After deep consideration, he came to a conclusion that widows of Vicitravirya could beget children by uniting with Brāhmanas. Citing historical examples, Bhishma said to Satyavati-It’s my suggestion that we request a Brāhmana
While listening to Bhishma, Satyavati remembered her past & said-I had also begotten a glorious son by accepting fond embraces of sage Parāsara. His name is Vyāsa. He promised, before leaving for forest to do austerities, that whenever I’m in difficulty he shall appear before me at once. As Satyavati meditated, Vyāsa instantly appeared before her. She bathed him in tears & fondly embraced him
Satyavati said to Vyāsa-Because of death of my husband & 2 sons and due to Bhishma’s vow to never marry, Kuru dynasty is in danger of becoming extinct. Because you’re eldest & my only remaining son, I request you to beget children in wombs of Vicitra’s widows. Vyāsa said-I accept your proposal for it is consonant with virtue but the 2 widows must first undergo austerities for 01 year as no woman should approach me without completing rigid vows
Satyavati was anxious & impatient & said-It is not advisable to keep kingdom without a ruler for long. Vyāsa relented & said if ladies are able to bear dirtiness of my body & dress, my strong odor & overall grim appearance, then it can be counted as an austerity
At the opportune time of conception, when Ambikā met Vyāsa, she was expecting to meet a great handsome Kshatriya hero, instead she saw Vyāsa with matted hair, grizzly beard, blazing eyes & closed her eyes out of fright. Afterwards Satyavati was told by Vyāsa that the son that would be born of Ambikā would have strength of 10000 elephants & will be intelligent. However due to fault of his mother, he will be born blind
Satyavati said-A blind son cannot become king! Help with another son, otherwise all our intentions will be frustrated
Facing situations on its merits & not on our preconceived notions is a hallmark of an intelligent person. We all have our version of turnout of people, situations & events and in case if it is not as per our liking, we get frustrated forgetting the whole purpose of being
We need to remember the motive in motion & not flow with emotion
