Forward Planning!
Dundubha regaining his native form of a Rsi, said to Ruru-The story of destruction of snakes at sacrifice of King Janmejaya & deliverance of terrified reptiles by Astika, the best of Dwijas, is profound Vedic lore
Sauti continued, Ruru then asked Rsi, why was Janmejaya bent upon destroying serpents and why & how they were saved by wise Astika? I’m anxious to hear all details. But the Rsi replied-You’ll learn this from the lips of a Brahmana, and saying this he vanished
Ruru ran about to search missing Rsi but failed to find him. He was greatly confounded & came home to ask his father about the history in question. His father Pramati said-The father of Astika was a powerful Prajapati named Jaratkuru. He was a great ascetic & had all his senses under control. Once he took journey of the world & visited diverse places & bathed in sacred waters. He practiced strict religious austerities, lived upon air & renounced sleep
One day he saw his ancestors, hanging heads down in a great hole with feet pointing upwards. On seeing them Jaratkuru said-Why you’re hanging like this? They replied-We are Rsis of rigid vows. We have a son named Jaratkuru but he has entered life of austerities & is not married to have an offspring. So, our race would be extinct
Jaratkuru said-I’m the one you’re referring to & would like to serve you. The fathers said-O child! Beget a son to extend our line. Jarat said-I shall not marry for my sake nor shall I earn wealth for my enjoyment, but I shall do whatever is for your welfare. By Sastric ordinance I’ll take a wife, but she should be of same name as myself. If someone gives his daughter as charity, I’ll wed her but not otherwise. This is only for your redemption
Jarat wandered far & wide but didn’t find anyone to marry, but still made efforts recollecting words of his ancestors. Thereafter Vāsuki, the serpent king came & proposed his younger sister with same name as Jaratkuru for marriage. The Rsi espoused her with ordained rites
Vāsuki made this plan because he knew that in due course, due to a curse all serpents will die in fire sacrifice of King Janmejaya. And to neutralize this curse, he got his sister married to the Rsi. A son called Astika, an illustrious ascetic was then born & he was the one who saved Nagas from complete annihilation in Janmejaya’s sacrifice
Huge learnings! Forward planning that despite any obstacle that might appear in due course, the situation remains stable, and resources are not wasted. This leads to maximization of satisfaction & fulfillment of goals. This is an amazing asset for an enterprise & allows to implement a strategy that works to optimize time & assets towards achieving goals
