Envy & Anger

After Pāndu’s return to Hastināpur along with his newly wedded wife Kunti, Bhisma desired that Pāndu should have a 2nd queen. He took his army & went to visit Salya, king of Madra. Salya provided royal reception & requested Bhisma to disclose the purpose of his visit. Bhisma said-I’ve come here with a hope that your sister will become Pāndu’s 2nd wife

Salya said, it’s our family tradition that we give girl in marriage only after receiving gifts of great wealth in return. After giving much gold & jewels, Bhisma brought Mādri & with great celebration she was married to Pāndu. It was a happy married life for Pāndu with his 2 beautiful wives. Bhisma also got Vidura married to daughter of King Devaka

After 30 days, Pāndu left with his army to conquer all rulers on earth. He vanquished many kings & subjugated numerous kingdoms and was regarded as greatest monarch on earth. Upon his return to Hastināpur, he was fondly welcomed & was considered equal in all respects to his great ancestors, Sāntanu & Bharat

Sometime later, Pāndu permanently retired to forest with his 2 wives & was always engaged in hunting. Dhritarashtra took care of his brother in forest & arranged all necessities for a comfortable stay

Gāndhari received boon from Vyāsadev of having 100 powerful sons, when she served him well during his stay at her house. When she became pregnant, she carried the embryo in her womb for full 2 years, without any sign of delivery. This made her very anxious & when she heard that Kunti had given birth to a glorious son, she became mad with jealousy. Due to envy & anger, Gāndhari lost all reason & in a fit of impatience, struck her abdomen with her fist

As a result, a mass of flesh hard like an iron ball came out of her womb. When she was about to throw that away, Vyāsdev suddenly appeared & said-What is that you have done? She replied frankly-Due to jealously of Kunti’s good fortune, I became upset & struck my stomach. Now, since this useless ball of flesh has come out, I realize that boon you gave to me has no value

Vyāsa said-My words can never prove futile. Bring me 100 clay pots & sprinkle some cool water over this ball of flesh. As she sprinkled, miraculously ball of flesh began to divide into 100 parts, each of size of thumb. They were placed in clay pots, filled with ghee & kept in secluded place. Vyāsa gave instructions to remove coverings from pots after 2 years & left. After 2 years elapsed, Duryodhana was born from one of the pots. All evil omens appeared

While contemplating objects of senses, a person develops attachment for them->from such attachment lust develops->from lust anger arises->from anger complete delusion arises->from delusion bewilderment of memory->When memory is bewildered->intelligence is lost->when intelligence is lost->one falls again into the material pool

Let’s not be governed by senses running after gratification but be in full control of intelligence, dovetailed in Supreme Lord
