Time it is!


Rsis said, O Sauti! We wish to hear full & circumstantial account of the place mentioned by you as Samanta-panchaka. Sauti said-In the interval between Treta & Dwapara Yugas, ParshuRām, son of Jamadāgni, urged by impatience of wrongs, repeatedly killed noble race of Kshatriyas. He annihilated entire tribe of Kshatriyas & formed at Samanta-panchaka 5 lakes of blood. He then offered oblations of blood to the manes of his ancestors. His forefathers of whom Richika was first came & said-O offspring of Bhrigu, we have been gratified with your reverence


O mighty one, ask the boon you may desire. Rām said-If you’re favorably disposed towards me, I ask that I may be absolved from sins born of my having annihilated Kshatriyas in anger & the lakes I have formed may become famous in world as holy shrines.


The Pitris said-So shall it be, and Rām was pacified. The region that lies near those lakes of gory water, from that time is celebrated as holy Samanta-panchaka. In the interval between Dwapara & KaliYuga there happened at this same place, encounter between armies of Kauravas & Pandavas. This place called Kurukshetra is holy region, without ruggedness of any kind, Here assembled 18 Akshauhinis of soldiers eager for battle & were all slain there


Rsis said-Sauti, we want to know what is implied by the term Akshauhini & what it is composed of


Sauti said-01 chariot, 01 elephant, 5 foot-soldiers & 3 horses form one Patti; 3 pattis make 01 Sena-mukha; 3 sena-mukhas are called a Gulma; 3 gulmas, a Gana; 3 ganas, a Vahini; 3 vahinis together are called a Pritana; 3 pritanas form a Chamu; 3 chamus, one Anikini; and an anikini taken 10x forms an Akshauhini.


So Akshauhini contains: 21870 chariots, same no. of elephants, 109350 foot-soldiers, 65610 horses. Accordingly, 18 Akshauhinis of Kaurava & Pandava army fought. Time, whose acts are wonderful, assembled them & having made Kauravas the cause, destroyed them all


Bhishma fought for 10 days, Drona for 5 days, Karna fought for 2 days and Shalya for half a day. After that lasted for half a day the encounter with clubs between Duryodhana and Bhima. At the close of that day, Aswatthama & Kripa destroyed army of Yudhishthira in the night while sleeping without suspicion of danger


Eternal time is primeval source of interactions of the 3 modes of material nature. It is unchangeable & limitless, and it works as instrument of Supreme Lord for His pastimes in the material creation. Without time, nothing happens in material world. As the most powerful force in the world, time is considered Krsna (as He says in Bhagavad-gita). Time controls everything & Krsna controls time. With rising and setting of the sun, everyone’s life is diminished by influence of time


64 crore people died in the war in 18 days & it was time which brought them all together. We can also see the omnipotence of time in our lives & should use it purposefully to raise our consciousness from material to spiritual

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made. Duryodhana flattered Salya by comparing him to Lord Brahmā, who formerly became Shiva’s charioteer at the time of destroying Tripura   Duryodhana concluded his long talk by saying: Dear Salya, Parasurāma delivered the entire science of weapons to Karna. Grudge-The heaviest thing to hold! Asvattāma hurriedly yoked horses to his chariot & set out, as Krpa & Krtvarma anxiously followed him. He soon arrived at Pāndava camp & saw a gigantic being with enormous head with flames emanating from his eyes, nose, ear & mouth   Asvattāma fearlessly attacked that awesome being with his celestial weapons but failed in all his attempt.
