Do we?

Sauti said to sages-I graphically described to you history of Utanka, which is one of the causes of King Janmejaya’s snake sacrifice. Now what you would like to hear & what I shall relate to you?

The sages said-we would like to listen to sacred stories on a variety of subjects & history of all wise men. But at first place, we want to listen about Bhrigu

Sauti spoke about exalted race of sage Bhrigu, revered by Indra & all gods and by the tribes of Rsis & Maruts. Sage Bhrigu-was given birth by self-existing Brahma from fire sacrifice of Varuna. Bhrigu had a son named Chyavana, who he dearly loved. To Chyavana was born a virtuous son called Pramati. whose son was Ruru by Ghritachi (celestial dancer). To Ruru, by his wife Pramadvara was born a son named Sunaka, who was devoted to asceticism, of great reputation, proficient in law & eminent in knowledges of Vedas

Sages asked Sauti to first tell them why was Bhrigu’s son was called Chyavana?

Sauti replied-Bhrigu had a wife named Puloma, whom he dearly loved. She was pregnant with his child. One day Bhrigu leaving her at home went to out to perform ablutions. It was then a demon came to Bhrigu’s abode and seeing Puloma was filled with lust & lost his senses. Beautiful Puloma welcomed the guest with roots & fruits. The demon was so enchanted with her that he decided to take her away

In the past, Puloma before being married to Bhrigu, had been betrothed to that demon but was subsequently married to the sage by her father. The demon thought that as Puloma was first accepted by me as my wife, hence he has all rights to take her away. He then decided to ask the sacrificial fire, which was burning at Bhrigu's abode, regarding his thoughts

On being requested again and again, the fire god after careful considerations said-O demon! This lady was duly made by Rsi Bhrigu as his wife with Vedic rites in my presence. I’ll dare not say falsehood as it is never respected in this world. Puloma is Bhrigu's wife only

Listening to this the demon was infuriated & assuming the form of a boar, carried Puloma away with the speed of wind. The child of Bhrigu in Puloma’s womb enraged at such violence, dropped from his mother’s womb by which he obtained the name Chyavana

When one is so engrossed in false ego, he does not want to listen to the truth but what is tailormade to suit his mind’s predispositions. False ego is subtlest of all the subtle material elements. Its foundational weapon is illusion that makes us (spirit souls) misidentify with our material bodies and give way to our uncontrolled senses. Under its influence we neglect truths and are carried away by them for self-destruction
