Adamant & resulting enmity!

Sage Ayoda Dhaumya disciple Veda after a trial, which he successfully passed, received blessings from his Guru & in due course of time, was appointed spiritual guide (Upadhyaya) of King Janmejaya & King Paushya. One day Veda departed from his home leaving his pupil Utanka in charge of his household

Utanka was very mindful of the injunctions of his Guru & looked after the house together with his master’s wife with diligence. When Veda returned & saw that his pupil was mindful of his duty, he was very happy & said to Utanka-You served well & I now allow you to take my leave, move on in life to fulfill your wishes

Utanka, before leaving said to his master-I want to fulfill one last wish of yours to honor you for what you have done for me. Veda said, if he wants to make him happy, he may in turn ask his wife what to bring. Utanka humbly asked his master’s wife, what she wished. She requested to bring the earrings of King Paushya’s queen

Utanka on arriving at King’s palace, saluted him & informed about his wish. King replied that he should go to the inner chambers to ask his wife about the earrings. Utanka approached the queen & begged for the rings, to give to his Guru’s wife in honor. The Queen gave the ring but warned him that Takshaka, the serpent king is very much desirous of these rings & he should be very careful about it

It so happened that Utanka stopped for water on his way back & a old beggar got hold of those rings & ran away. As Utanka chased him, it changed his form to a serpent & slid inside a hole to reach his abode, the under region of serpents. The serpent was Takshaka himself. Utanka prayed humbly & was even helped by Indra to retrieve the earrings but Takshaka was very adamant not to return it. Agni (fire god) then helped Utanka to retrieve the rings by blowing fire in serpent’s abode

Utanka returned with the rings and gave it to his master’s wife to make her happy. But Utanka was very upset with Takshaka’s adamancy and his behavior. He then approached King Janmejaya to remind him that his father King Parikshit was killed by Takshaka & so he should launch a snake sacrifice to kill all serpents on earth including their king. Janmejaya did arrange such sacrifice

When someone humbly requests favor as per his rights, adamancy on our part unnecessarily creates enmity which could be catastrophic. The entire Serpent race was about to be killed just by one act of adamancy
