Serve with devotion
King Dasaratha said to his son- O Rām! Blessed indeed are those, who will witness your return to Ayodhya & see you consecrated on its throne as ruler of earth. I desire to see you reunited with Bharata, who is so much affectionate towards you, is honest & virtuous too. You resided 14 years in forest with Laxman & Sita and have completed the term of your exile. The pledge which I had made has been implemented by you. The celestials too have been gratified by the killing of Rāvan, who was tormenting all
A laudable act has been done & glory has been earned by you. After ascending the throne, may you attain long life along with your brothers. Rām with joined palms said-O knower of virtues, be gracious to Mother Kaikeyi & Bharata. I hope you remember your words spoken to mother, saying “I disown you with your son (Bharata)”. May that terrible curse not touch either Kaikeyi or her son
Dasaratha smilingly said-May it be! He then embraced Laxman & said-I am deeply gratified by your unrelenting devotional service to Rām & Sita. I bless you with all the merits & am very pleased by your efforts. Happiness to you, the augmentor of joy to Sumitra, your mother. Serve him always & contribute in his efforts to advance the interest of the entire world. Having served hi along with Sitā, you’ve obtained the reward of the practice of all virtues
Dasaratha then addressed his daughter in law, who was standing in front with joined palms-My daughter! You should never be angry with Rām for having repudiated you. This is done with the only intent of your welfare & to demonstrate your purity. The act of entering into fire which was done by you & which reveals your true character my daughter, is the most difficult task to perform for anyone else & will overshadow their illustriousness
You need not be instructed about the matter of rendering service to your husband., but I would still say that he is your supreme deity
Having thus instructed his sons & Sitā, King Dasaratha went back to the abode of Indra in the aerial car. He was his satisfied self and blessed all as he took leave
In life what we do is important but more important is why we do what we do. Our intention is very critical in whatever we do. Our attitude to serve is not only appreciated by all but also nourishes self. Also, if service is done to feed our ego and earn praise, then it suffocates the very purpose and goes against the principles
If some selfish desires creeps within us because of our past conditionings, then we should fight & not feed. When such desires push us to hog the limelight, we should be careful about what is happening & rectify ourselves, giving credit to the Supreme Lord for whatever we do
Laxman is an epitome of selfless service
Huge lessons for us towards our work ethics
