Power of Words!


Hanumān said to Sitā-Rāvan, the enemy, has been killed. Lankā has been subdued. With a firm determination to win you back, a bridge was constructed by Vānara army across the ocean & today the vow has been fulfilled. You ought not to have any fear, living as you do in the abode of Rāvan. The kingdom of Lankā has now been placed under the kingship of Vibhishana now. He too is coming to you soon, being eager to see you & your welfare


Hearing these words, Sitā, the divine lady, whose face resembled the moon, could not speak & was tongue-tied with the thrill of delight. Hanumān then spoke to Sitā, who was not saying anything-O Mother! What are you reflecting upon? Why don’t you speak to me?


Thus, asked by Hanumān, Sitā who was ever established in a righteous path, was very much delighted & said in a voice choked with tears-Hearing the pleasant tidings about the victory of my husband, I became speechless for a while, overpowered as I was by extreme joy. O Hanumān! I indeed do not see anything appropriate here, which I can give you in return to please you, who has announced such pleasant news to me. Nor do I perceive anything worthy for you on this earth for your act of conveying this agreeable news to me, bestowing which gives happiness to me


Neither silver, nor gold nor even diamonds nor the sovereignty of 3 worlds can be worthy of this message


Hearing the words of Sitā, Hanumān standing with his face turned towards Sitā, with his hands joined in salutation, joyfully said-Always interested in things agreeable & beneficial to your husband & wishing for his victory, you alone deserve to speak such words of affection. These words endowed with precious endearment are better than various kind of collection of diamonds or sovereignty over celestials


For me, seeing Rām victorious & happy is everything & with it, I have attained all blessings & wealth. Hearing this Sitā replied-You alone can utter these words, endowed with good attributes, embellished with grace, filled with intelligence & consisting of 8 excellences viz Keenness, readiness, receptivity, retention, reasoning, proposition, comprehension & realization of truth. You’re praiseworthy & supremely virtuous son of wind god


Words are just not vehicles to express our thoughts, they are also engines to animate our thoughts. We can choose words which can persuade others as well as reach out to them. Words can convey sound arguments & invite others to logically evaluate those arguments. Words convey our feelings, care & love and expresses them earnestly. We can pursue others to shed their defenses and accept our proposition wholeheartedly. They can then appreciate our thoughts & paves way for a meaningful dialogue

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made. Duryodhana flattered Salya by comparing him to Lord Brahmā, who formerly became Shiva’s charioteer at the time of destroying Tripura   Duryodhana concluded his long talk by saying: Dear Salya, Parasurāma delivered the entire science of weapons to Karna. Grudge-The heaviest thing to hold! Asvattāma hurriedly yoked horses to his chariot & set out, as Krpa & Krtvarma anxiously followed him. He soon arrived at Pāndava camp & saw a gigantic being with enormous head with flames emanating from his eyes, nose, ear & mouth   Asvattāma fearlessly attacked that awesome being with his celestial weapons but failed in all his attempt. He thought to himself: Krpa had warned me that persons who don’t listen to their elders must lament later. The frustration of my attempt must be due to its inherently sinful nature.
