How leaders should behave!

Sitā said to Hanumān-Kindness should be shown by a noble person both to sinner & to virtuous person or even to a person who deserves death, for there is none who has never committed any wrong

पापानां वा शुभानां वा वधार्हाणां प्लवङ्गम ||

कार्यं कारुण्यमार्येण न कश्चिन्नापराध्यति |

No evil is to be done, even to those cruel persons of sinful deeds who take pleasure to harm life of others & continue to perpetrate sinful acts

Hearing words of Sitā, Hanumān who was skilled in speech, replied-O divine lady! You’re apt wife of Rām who is full of virtue. Give me a message in return & I will convey the same to him. Then Janaka’s daughter said-O foremost Vānara, I long to see my husband!

Hearing these words of Sitā, highly intelligent Hanumān, bringing delight to Sitā said-You shall today see Rām, whose countenance is like a full moon, whose friends are alive & whose enemies have been killed. He will come along with Laxman

Thus, speaking to Sitā, who appeared radiant before his eyes as Laxmi, the goddess of prosperity, Hanumān of great splendor came back to the place where Rām stayed. He offered salutations & then speedily narrated in sequential order, the message given by Sitā to Rām

Hanumān said-You ought to see Sitā, who is consumed by grief, for whose sake this course of actions was undertaken (coming to Lankā & killing Rāvan) & which has now borne fruit. Hearing the news of your victory, Sitā who was stricken with grief, is now longing to see you with her eyes filled with tears of joy. Because of her trust in me due to confidence she has from her experience, she said-I desire to see my husband, who has accomplished his purpose, together with Laxman

Hearing Hanumān’s words, Rām who was foremost among the supporters of righteousness, was a little overwhelmed with tears & suddenly became a bit thoughtful. Drawing a deep & warm breath and casting his looks on the ground, he said to Vibhishana standing nearby-Bring Sitā here after she has bathed from head, has been anointed with charming cosmetics & adorned with beautiful jewels. Let there be no delay

When one is at a position where others are observing and following, then principled behavior should always be displayed

Krsna says in Gitā

yad yad ācarati śreṣṭhas tat tad evetaro janaḥ

sa yat pramāṇaṁ kurute lokas tad anuvartate

Whatever action a great man performs, common men follow. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues.

People in general always require a leader who can teach public by practical behavior. A leader cannot teach public to stop smoking if he himself smokes. Lord Caitanya said that a teacher should behave properly before he begins teaching. One who teaches in that way is called ācārya, or the ideal teacher. Therefore, a teacher must follow principles of śāstra (scripture) to teach common man. The teacher cannot manufacture rules against the principles of revealed scriptures, says Srila Prabhupada
