Lord’s mercy

Mandodari seeing Rāvan lying dead on battlefield, said-In the past by performing great penance you conquered the senses & won 3 worlds. But now as if in revenge, those very senses conquered you. You didn’t heed to my advice for not having any hostility with Rām & the evil result of that is in front of us

For the annihilation of your power, your body & your people, you conceived desire for Sitā suddenly. O foolish one! An unworthy act was indeed done by you, in offending Sitā, who is more distinguished & respectable than Arundhati (wife of Sage Vashishtha) & Rohini (principal spouse of moon god)

Sitā is the model of forbearance even to Goddess Earth & a model of grace to Laxmi, goddess of fortune & charm. She is extremely fond of her husband. By a recourse to a fraud in bringing that Sitā in a lonely forest, faultless in every limb as she was, charming though miserable & having failed to fulfill your desire for union with Sitā due to your own fault, you have been surely consumed by asceticism of that woman, devoted as she is to her husband

Because the gods together with Indra, and fire-god feared you, you were not consumed even while you were laying hands on Sitā. But there is no doubt that when the time comes, the doer surely reaps a harsh fruit of his sinful deed, while the doer of auspicious act obtains happiness. While Vibhishana obtained happiness, you met with such an evil destiny

There were other excellent women in your gynaecium but having fallen prey to the power of your passion you did not know it through ignorance. At any time, there is no causeless death for any living being & for you Sitā is the cause for your death. Death in the form of Sitā was invited by you from a far-off distance. Sitā will now be restored to Rām, free from her sorrow

I however, whose stock of merit was deficient, have fallen into a terrible ocean of grief. I, who with you enjoyed our trips in Pushpaka Vimana to mount Kailasa, Manadar & Meru & went to grove named Chaitratha and all celestial gardens, decked in lovely garlands, clad in colorful robes, saw various lands of every description. Now I’m deprived of everything & stand transformed into a destitute. What flickering fortunes of Kings!

Here Mandodari is reflecting about Sitā becoming the cause of Rāvan’s death & is not assigning Rām’s valor responsible for his demise. Normally we are instruments in Supreme Lord’s plan but here the Lord himself has become the instrument for the benefit of his devotee Sitā. We also have seen that in Mahabharata war, Krsna became an instrument for Arjuna’s cause, such is his mercy

When we also follow in the footsteps of way carved out by the Lord, he protects us and even fights for us

Krsna declares to Arjuna

ksipram bhavati dharmatma sasvac-chantim nigacchati

kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati

He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting peace. O son of Kunti, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes
