Kshama(forgiveness)
Rām said to Vibhishana-There is no occasion to grieve for Rāvan for he has fallen to death in the battlefield. Don’t grieve for him, who is now brought under the sway of death, but was intelligent & all the three worlds including Indra were frightened of him
In the past, none has ever been exclusively victorious in a combat. A hero either has been killed by his adversaries or had killed the enemies in battle. Such destiny as proclaimed by the ancients, is highly esteemed for a warrior. A warrior killed in battle, does not deserve to be mourned as per the ascertainment of the sacred scriptures. Therefore, understanding the true principle, be free from grief & think of what duty deserves to be performed by you
To that valiant prince Rām, by whom the aforesaid words were spoken, Vibhishana, who was tormented with grief, spoke about the suitable action to be done next in relation to his brother- O Rām! The demon, who had never been conquered before in battles, even by all the gods combined or by Indra himself, has been conquered, on confronting you in the battlefield, as the sea breaks up on reaching the shore. By him, gifts were endowed to mendicants, pleasures too were enjoyed, servants were fully maintained, riches were made over to friends & grudges against enemies were revenged
Rāvan maintained a perpetually sacred fire & practiced great religious austerities. He completely mastered Vedas, the sacred scriptures. He was highly proficient even in the ritual acts. Alas he was bewildered & lost in his own mental concoction of what is Dharma & what Adharma
Vibhishana further continued-I desire to do, with your graciousness, the rituals which is to be performed for ones who depart to the other world
Thus, getting the personality of Rāvan well-acquainted, by Vibhishana thro’ his compassionate words, Rām possessing unimpaired goodness, directed Vibhishana to perform the funeral rites, which were intended to lead the departed soul to heaven. Hostilities end with death. Our purpose has been accomplished. Let his funeral rites be performed. He is even as good for me as he is to you, said Rām
“Kshama” (forgiveness) is not when someone asks for forgiveness & we pardon them, but it is when we forgive them without even asking. If we realize that we are embodied soul & not this body, then the element of forgiveness is inbuilt. Everyone acts as per the modes of material nature – Sattva(goodness), Rajas(passion), Tamas(ignorance) but the one situated in Shudh Sattva (pure goodness) does not take cognizance of any action towards him rather he takes it as a will of God. He just executes his duty towards the establishment of Dharma & that is his only satisfaction & fulfilment
