In the forefront of battle, Rām released terrific arrows towards Rāvan who was seated on a chariot. The gods, celestials & sages seeing from above thought that the battle between two was not on equal terms as Rām was standing on ground while Rāvan was fighting from chariot
Illustrious Indra, the chief of celestials then called Matali & said-Go quickly with my chariot to Rām, invite him to take his seat on it & carry out his great service to get rid of cruel Rāvan. Hearing these words, Matali, the charioteer of Indra said-I’ll proceed immediately & perform my duty to serve Rām
Ascending glorious & excellent chariot of Indra, having variegated body decked in gold, fitted with 100’s of tiny bells, with its pole of cat's eye gems shining like morning sun, yoked to excellent green horses having golden chaplets on their heads, having white whisks covered with nets of gold & bearing a flag-staff raised on a golden bamboo, Matali descended from paradise & approached Rām
Matali joined his palms & said to Rām-Indra has sent this chariot to you for your victory. Also here is great bow of Indra, an armor shining as fire, arrows as bright Sun & a stainless auspicious spear. Mount this chariot with me as charioteer & kill Rāvan. Rām duly circumambulated the chariot as a mark of respect & ascended it, causing the 3 worlds to shine forth with his splendor
A tumultuous & thrilling battle ensued between Rām & Rāvan as they shot powerful missiles at each other. An arrow from Rāvan’s bow converted to highly poisonous snakes & rolled towards Rām. With flaming mouths vomiting blazing fire, dreadful snakelike arrows covered Rām from all sides, but it was neutralized by Garuda missile of Rām
After multiple exchanges of powerful missiles, Rāvan then pierced Matali with multiple arrows, tore flag staff & struck the horses. Seeing this Vānara army & all were perturbed. Rāvan having 10 faces & 20 arms, held a bow tightly in his hand & looked like mount Mainaka. Being overwhelmed by Rāvan, Rām could not fit his arrows to his bow
Enraged Rām, knitting his eyebrows, with his eyes turning blood-red, was provoked to fierce anger, as though he would burn out demons. Seeing the face of the sagacious Rām getting provoked thus, all living beings got frightened & earth too began to tremble
We all face situations when our emotions go wild & push us to act impulsively in a fit of anger. Such provocations come & go and we ride a roller coaster of emotions. We may decide to be self-controlled but fail at the crux
The clue to be composed is to change our focus. Instead of controlling our feelings, we can strive to control our actions. By doing this we shield our emotional surge by how we react to it. Practicing thus we gradually can become reflective to transcend the disruptive emotions. Mantra meditation surely helps us in this practice & elevates us to realize ourselves as soul and not this body
