Eternal not temporal!
Mandodari gravely lamented on Rāvan’s death & said-The popular saying that the tears of a virtuous wife do not generally fall on the ground in vain, has come out true in your case O King! The mean act of abducting a pious lady done by you, who having invaded the 3 worlds was proud of his prowess. It was indeed a mark of your cowardice, that Sitā was borne away by you after luring away Rām from his hermitage on the pretext of a deer
I don’t recall your faint heartedness at any time on the battlefield, but the case of abduction of Sitā however was due to your ill luck & certainly as the result of your sins. O mighty armed! Whatever my younger brother-in-law, Vibhishana, who knows matters relating to past & of future and is conversant with present, said on seeing Sitā abducted by you that the destruction of the chief among demons now is imminent, has become true. This misfortune had come from your lust, wrath & addiction to vice of deep attachment
The disaster has occurred, destroying our very roots, because of you & the entire demon race has been deprived of its protector. By taking away your merit & sin, you’ve obtained your fate. I however, mourn for my own self afflicted misery by your death
You neither heard the advice of your friends wishing your welfare nor words of your brothers completely. The counsel offered by Vibhishana endowed with reason, meaning, rule of conduct & was well founded, was not implemented by you. The advice offered by Māricha, Kumbhakarna, myself & my father were neglected due to your arrogance. What followed was a bitter consequence of your perversity. As you lie down, embracing dust & returned to the five elements, my heart bursts in grief & eyes filled with tears
Mandodari then fell on the breast of Rāvan like a vivid flash of lightning across a rainy cloud, reddened by the flow of twilight. Other co-wives of Rāvan then lifted her & consoled saying-O queen! We know that wealth of kings is unsteady & there is change in the tide of their fate. All wept aloud and were very much distressed
We all wish to do well in life and strive to have material possessions & positions which are indicators of our progress and success. When we lose them or don’t get what we expect to, we lament. This needs to be seen in perspective
We need to know that everything in this world is temporary & if our consciousness is dovetailed to them, we are in for distress. No matter how well we fare in life, we eventually must bid farewell to life, and it would not be joyful but tearful
Does this mean we passively resign to our fate? No! We need to identify ourselves as eternal souls who are meant to be blissful in the eternal love of the Supreme Lord. That is not temporal but eternal. If we realize & practice this, we would never have to say farewell to material but would embrace spiritual in all
