Detachment!

Hanumān not able to identify all 4 herbs required to treat Laxman, was thoughtful as he decided to take entire mount Aushadhi to Lankā. By conjecture I understand that the delightful herb, as per Sushena is on this mountain peak, but if I go without taking Vishalyakarani, harm may come in due course & great perplexity may arise-thought Hanumān

Thus, he took the mountain in his arms, shook it violently 3 times & uprooted it. The mighty peak was endowed with many trees in bloom but was dwarfed by Hanumān’s huge form. Taking that mountain which looked like a dark rainy cloud, he jumped in sky & traversed the distance with great speed to reach Lankā

Putting it down, Hanumān spoke humbly to Sushena-O learned one! I’ve brought the entire mountain peak as I couldn’t identify all the herbs. Eulogizing Hanumān, who was narrating his trip, Sushena pulled out the requisite herbs needed to treat Laxman from the mountain peak & held them. All the Vānara chiefs & even the celestials were surprised to see the most difficult feat executed by Hanumān

Crushing the herb, Sushena administered the herbs thro’ Laxman’s nose. Inhaling the same, the spear which was lodged in Laxman’s body was released & he was rid of the pain. As other herbs were given, Laxman recovered fully from his injuries & rose from the ground. Vānaras were overjoyed crying Excellent Excellent!

Rām’s eyes clouded with tears exclaimed-Brother come, come! & embraced him firmly with affection. Luckily you’ve returned from death. There is no purpose of mine, be my life or of Sitā or of victory in this battle, beside you. If you would have attained demise, there is no significance of anything for me

Laxman was overwhelmed with love but steadied himself & said -O faultless one! Getting anxious for my sake is not befitting for you. Fulfill your promise of killing Rāvan now. Any enemy who falls victim to your arrows, can’t return alive. I for my part wish to see the evil-minded demon king killed instantly before the sun sinks below the horizon today

Hearing the words of Laxman, valiant Rām, the annihilator of enemies, took hold of his bow & fixed an arrow on the bow string

Laxman exudes detachment to focus on duty. Love means execution of responsibilities. Similarly if work is worship, it needs to be done adhering to certain values of detachment, duty & devotion. Detachment does not mean we don’t care for results for what we do, but to understand that result depends on many more factors apart from us & we accept whatever is delivered by divine arrangement

When we cultivate devotion for Supreme Lord, we see our work as a means to please him & he is pleased by our endeavors dovetailed to principles not the end result

Huge implications of this principle in today’s world, where people make huge efforts not dovetailed to the Supreme, the result of which then goes in vain
