Detachment!

As funeral rites of Rāvan was completed & his body returned to elements, lamenting womenfolk went back to Lankā. Vibhishana then approached Rām & stood in front of him with humility. Having destroyed the enemy, all were experiencing happiness-the Vānara army led by Sugriva, Jāmbavan, Laxman & other chiefs. Rām took off his bow & arrows and great armor endowed to him by Indra and assumed charming benevolence

Having seen destruction of Rāvan, celestials discussed about the awful destruction of Rāvan, the terrific prowess of Rām, the admirable combat of Vānaras, the counsel tendered by Sugriva, the affection & valor of Laxman, the loyalty of Sitā to her husband, the strength of Hanumān and then went away in their respective aerial cars happily

Taking leave of the celestial chariot, which had been given by Indra and shone like fire, mighty Rām respectfully saluted Matāli, Indra’s charioteer, who in turn paid his utmost respect to him & ascended to heaven. Rām embraced Sugriva & was greeted by Laxman. He was honored by Vānara troops, and all returned to camp where army was stationed

Rām then spoke to Laxman-O benevolent Saumitra! Consecrate Vibhishana to the throne of Lankā. He is attached to each of the citizens, is a loyal person & has done great service to all of us. It is my paramount desire to see Vibhishana established on the throne of Lankā

Hearing words of great soul Rām, Laxman said-So it be & rejoicingly procured golden pots. He then placed the pots in the hands of Vānara chiefs & instructed them to bring sea water. The excellent Vānaras, with swiftness of thought moved quickly from that place & returned after obtaining water from sea

Laxman then took one pot & making Vibhishana sit on the throne, sprinkled him with sea water as per the rules of Vedic scriptures to anoint a king. Demons too surrounded the throne & witnessed the ceremony of making Vibhishana the king of Lankā as directed by Rām. Seeing Vibhishana consecrated as king, his four counsellors who were always with him, rejoiced

Vibhishana having gained the great kingdom bestowed on him by Rām, consoled his people who lamented death of Rāvan. He assured care & protection to all

Rām exhibits one of the most important element of our work ethics which is detachment. The kingdom which he won with so much struggle, was gifted to Vibhishana with a sense of responsibility. Detachment is a quality which protects us from any negative thoughts & discouragement when we face challenges in life. To avoid outer disappointments, detachment provides inner strength

Detachment doesn’t mean we don’t care for results but we care more for our consciousness, which is the most important thing for achieving any worthwhile result. As long as it is positive & purposeful, we can always strive for better results next time. It also prevents us from any attachment to things which is not ours and helps us to be stable on the path of righteousness

  1. Another facet of this instance is that of the victor's wisdom in anointing someone from the defeated party to take over the reins of the kingdom, rather than imposing someone from outside as a successor. MNCs which take over an existing organization in a country appoint a country manager by promoting local talent from within the country's organization stand a faster rate of success and stability, since he/she would be familiar with the local culture, ethos and value systems.
